A decent bunch turned up this morning and the paceline was a relatively smooth affair with an average speed of 39.07 for the extended distance. Thanx Lord Garmin.
The coin slot sprint was an execution by the big boys in the bunch. I think there was a little bit of team tactics happening when the hammer was dropped??? In the end, Thunder blocked in Johann to take the win. Must have been bonus points on that kick this morning?
A majority of the bunch rolled through Haddock this morning. I must say thanx to Grazza. Without your little hand gesture at the top of Dawson Highway, I would have been a Kirkwood Kat this morning. I managed to get my legs around it, but I think my head is somewhere out there still.
Congrats to SpyCat for kicking the boys butts over the Cockatoo drive hills. You go girl - I can hear C grade calling you already!!!

Product Of The Week
If you're into maximum recovery, you'll be into this weeks product of the week. Skins. They've been around for a while and the Skin knicks have been stocked at M1 for a couple of months now.
A new delivery has been made to the shop including long knicks for winter riding. Just in time I think.
Check out the website for full techno info www.skins.net According to Skins, you should enjoy giving fate the finger.
Racing Wrap Up - 28th & 29th
With M1 riders spread across the country over the weekend, reports were coming in for most of Sunday with results.
Rocky Racing - Mick Newell somehow scored a race in C grade - which he won convincingly. No chance you will be there next week mate! Cat will be lucky to stay in D grade with her second placing. Johann joined the A grade field to finish 4th. Lack of racing experience saw him at the front of the group coming into the final kick. Bec and Whiffo also made the trip up for the first race but finished out of the placings in D and B grade.
Special K - Our resident tri boy made the trip to Tasmania for the weekend to compete in a qualifying event for Australian selection. Late yesterday afternoon full results weren't available, but Steve was confident that it was a top 5 finish.
Mooloolaba - For Farm Boy, results are sketchy. A fast time I think, 1hr 2mins? Happy with the results, I think? Farm Boy - let us know. Don't worry, Liz eats Gorillas for breakfast. IJ competed in both the crit and kremese with his new team - Dixon Homes. The field was busted apart in the crit with only a few select riders completing the distance. Better fortunes were had in the 90min Kremese with IJ working hard to finish in the main bunch.
Job well done to all those who raced on the weeekend.

Late Saturday Ride - 28th March
A late posting for the Saturday bunch ride due to the Blogmistress' lack of technology over the weekend.
Those heading out around the block had a bunch of 9 which included a Brisbane visitor - Andrew. Scottie made a break away attempt at Beecher but it was not to be. Scotties plans of a McDonalds solo victory salut were spoiled by Mickey Yong and Grazza.
With Mickey Yong's legs giving way at Redrover - probably due to lack of training!!! - the sprint came down to Scottie, Grazza and Sumo with Grazza getting the spoils.
Thanx to Scottie for the update.

Weekend Plans
There's quite a bit happening in M1 Land this weekend.
The first road race of the season kicks off in Rocky at 2pm tomorrow at the Caves. Day licences are apparently available if you want to have a go before getting a full licence. Full details are on the Rocky website.
Ekka and Chappo are heading to the Bunya Mountains near Kingaroy for a weekend MTB adventure. Sounds like good clean fun.
Farm Boy is heading to Mooloolaba to compete in the teams event of the Mooloolaba triathalon. I'm sure after Wednesday's effort, Farm Boy will be on fire with a super fast time. Farm Boy - Its a good opportunity to redeem yourself after the hill climb!!
Good luck to all those M1 riders heading away for weekend racing and riding.

Thursday Ride - 26th March
A smaller bunch than usual turned up for last nites ride. The numbers were down, but the atmosphere and level of safety were definately up!! With a bunch of 7 if was a comfortable pace in great conditions.
Chappo arrived in one piece and has taken the step to upgrade his pedals and shoes. Next stop - Knicks.
I'm afraid Scottie that I think its going to be awhile before you get a mention for bike performance given that last nite you led the bunch straight through the roundabout instead of left. Dear me Scottie, another non-performance mention!!
Woody - I'm hoping you did a load of washing yesterday, or maybe you have two pairs of the same knicks??? Here's hoping.

Adopted Rider Profile - Lewis Marshall

1. What bike do you ride?
Specialized SL2 S-Works Tarmac supplied by Tuckers (had to put that in Thunder)
2. What would be your dream bike?
The above with the new electronic shifting system or the same Specialized S-Works Transition TT bike Fabian Cancellara rides (not yours Fabio) check the bike out in cyclingnews web site.
3. What's your day job?
Environmental Protection Agency, Project Manager (semi retired)
4. What's your favourite ride?
When I can, the Wednesday night ride with you Gladstone legends. I have done it twice and it has everything that a good training ride should have and the pace that is set from the start to the finish is great (just ask Deano as he nearly had a heart attack before we reached the turn off to Yarwun). Your training rides are good “no posing/social rides like most of the Rocky rides are”. I believe you guys and girls will kick ass in Rock-Vegas when the race season begins, if what I have seen on your training rides so far!
5. Most memorable biking experience?
I have only been riding the road since I came to Rocky last year as I lived at Longreach and it is very hard to bunny hop the cattle grids out there on a roadie, so I mostly rode mountain bikes and did the cross country riding thing. Winning the Charters to Townsville, Bob Campbell Memorial handicap race and winning two silver and one bronze medal at the Maryborough Masters last year are my most memorable experiences so far.
6. Least memorable biking experience?
Crashing out, when in a winning position at the Tour de Tablelands last year. Lesson learnt “do not get to close to someone’s rear wheel when they do not want to lead out”. Last thing I remember was cart wheeling into the rain forest!
7. Bike rider you admire the most?
“Thunder” as he is the only rider I have met who can be on the limit and still be mouthing off! Also Stewart O’Grady as he is tough as nails and his win in the Paris Roubaix was unreal and he has done everything in cycling without the big head a lot of pros have. I hope to meet him at the next years Tour Down Under.

3 Men And A Little Lady
I'm sure they made a movie about last nites ride. Maybe the title should be 3 Men and a Baby. The 3 men - Thunder, Farm Boy and Fab. That leaves me - the baby. Holding on for dear life, not pulling turns, hiding at the back of the 3 boys for all that I was worth. Did I hit any wind??? NOT A CHANCE.
At the Historical Village I figured out why no one wants ride Wednesday Nites Farm Boy. 36k/hr average. Enough said.
At the River Ranch Hills it was a case of "Thank Trek Your Here!". Our foursome turned into 6 as we collected BSB and Woody. I've never been so glad to pick up riders.
Kittstar - Harden up. Gorilla would eat smashfest rides for breakfast!

Haddock Hitters & Kirkwood Kats
For two reasons, I noticed that winter is on its way. Firstly, it was still pretty dark at the end of the first paceline and secondly, there was definately a nip in the air when we turned right at Dawson Hway and rode into the Freezer.
Scottie was late to the ride and missed his stretching session. Must have been the bumble bee suit he was wearing today. It was noticed Scottie that your black and yellow kit and shoes matched perfectly with your Trek. Was that planned or what???
Whiffo pulled the stunt of the year on the paceline - dropping his pump on lap one and stopping to pick it up on lap two. A good way to get out of the hurt Whiff.
BSB must have had grasshoppers pre-ride as he flew up Haddock like a man possessed. Special K must have been inspired by his $500 cheque and was close behind BSB. This year for Christmas I'm asking for some hill climbing legs.
Another great ride today.

21st March - Time Trial
For the first event on the local calendar, two Gladstone riders made the trip to Rocky to compete in the time trial.
Whiffo averaged between 35-36k/hr for the distance and finished just outside the top 3 in B grade. One of our adopted riders Big Lew, placed second in B grade.
Whiffo's son, Ben competed in F grade over 5ks and rode for the first time with cleats and went well.
Times and full results will be posted on the Rocky website.

NEWSFLASH
In news just to hand, Farm Boy was whipped (like cream) by two little girls at the Mt Cootha Challenge yesterday.
Reports are that one of the little girls was the RETIRED Lorian Graham. It is believed that Farm Boy has gone underground in shame and has not been seen by the public since.
I will keep you posted as more news is available...... Oh, hang on, its just arrived. Farm Boys time was 8.14min and Wazza B 10.11min. Karen was also spotted in M1 kit climbing the hill.

Saturday Morning Rides
It appears that some riders are enjoying the ride around the block on a Saturday morning that much that they have decided to brave the coolness and continue the ride. For those still keen to do the block, the ride will leave at 5:00am from Hungrys.
The ride leaving Fordy's Fish and Chip shop at 5:30am will still be on for those wanting a shorter ride or for those who are racing in the afternoon.

Weekend Wrap Up
There was a decent bunch that turned up for the last Saturday Smashfest before the road season. Reports are that the hitters group completely destroyed themselves by the end of the ride with only 3 making it to maccas.
There are secrect squirral reports that Thomas and Fab pulled the pin at Yarwun and headed back into town??? Can this be true - two of the hardest boys in the bunch going soft????
For me, it was a leisurely roll around the block. Good to have an easy one. Nice birthday helmet Cat.

Happy Birthday - SpyCat
This one nearly slipped under the radar, but luckily it didn't.
This rider has the biggest heart I know when it comes to putting in the effort on a smashfest ride. Like a beaver on a bit of wood or a dog with a new bone - SpyCat never gives up. Cat's been a fantastic addition to the bunch over the last few months and is about to be welcomed to C grade racing!!
Happy birthday SpyCat, hope you're having a great day.

Bike Bling
We have some pretty impressive bling bikes in the M1 bunch and quite a few of those are Trek Madones. Yummy.
However, earlier this morning I received an email from Jake with a bling bike that is pretty darn impressive with a price tag to match.
Follow the link for a bling read http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,25204142-5018055,00.html

The Beehive Ride
As the little M1 bees flew into the hive ready for another mission, discussion was revolving around Fabs cleanly shaven legs and the invasion from some Pink Boys from Rock Vegas - Deano & Lew.
As our little swarm left the hive, the conversation somehow went along the lines of Princesses, pink tutus and hardening up. Was that aimed at me boys??? I now know why I missed the Wednesday nite rides.
Ekka won the best and fairest award for the paceline effort across the way with everyone staying together until the last few hundred metres. At River Ranch hills the bunch ran into BSB who had snuck off early at 5:15. I'm watching you BSB - you're improvement, especially in hills is starting to attract my attention.
Quote of the nite came from Deano after making it to Yarwun - "If that was your medium, I'd hate to see what your firm is". Our Latin lesson for this week was "Peleton" - meaning swarm of bees. Thanx Ekka.

Rider Profile - Mick Newell

1. What bike do you ride (road)?
GTR Carbon Pro
2. What would be your dream bike?
Don't know really, something Carbon with Durace or Sram Red, maybe Trek Madone 6.9
3. What's your day job?
Arresting naughty people
4. What's your favourite ride?
I love the Saturday hitters ride, it is all about surviving the ride to the end, pushing yourself to do he next turn. Sometimes I am that stuffed i need a way to keep my head together, so I count the number of riders to see how long I have got before I get back the front and get smashed again. That way I know I have two minutes of pain then I can relax for a while.
5. Most memorable biking experience?
Melbournes "Around the bay in a day 2008", was a great experience.
6. Least memorable biking experience?
Bit of a toss up really, either stopping at the lights and falling over in front of the whole hitters bunch on my first ever Tuesday Hitters ride, or watching Catriona smash straight into the side of a Jaguar which failed to give way to her in Frankston. Victoria. She went over the bonnet, snapped the ornament off and landed on he road on the other side. Looked nasty at the time. Like a typical M1 trooper ,she bounced up, gave him a gob full and rode off.
7. Bike rider you admire the most?
On the international scene I admire Cadel Evans and Stewart O Grady, on the local level I admire the commitment Ian Johnstone has to his riding, he deserves every win he gets, Matty keeps the world turning, and my "head on", he has always been great support to me and provides me with "counselling" whether I need it or not, Kittstar is always there to push me along with a kind word or bit of advice when I am feeling "the box" catching me up. and Farm Boy just for being a bloody freak. How does he climb like that?

Tuesday Ride - 17th March
Ok. Its a late edition of the Tuesday ride, but that's called reality. Chris A - who shall now be known as "Badger", purely as a result of turning up bald to the ride, proudly showed off his new hair do at the start of the ride
Today was the first of the extended paceline efforts all the way to Spinniker Park and can I say, what an impressive effort from all. Ken has now also scored himself a new knickname "BSB" - Brown Sock Boy. Ken, I'm still shaking my head.
I'm pleased to gloat that I scored the first Coin Slot kick for the year. I'll take bragging rights when I can. It earned me a call of Bee-atch from Whiffo. Don't worry Whiff, I'm taking that as a compliment!!
Another great ride guys. And today I can say girls as FINALLY, there was three of us!!

Weekend Warrior

Although technically speaking this is the "Roadie Page", Ekka sent me some great photos which are well and truly worthy of a blog posting. Ekka spent the weekend mountain biking and camping up at Kroombit Tops.
From a quick chat with Ekka, he said he had a great time and the tracks are in good condition. I'm sure there will be plenty more Ekka Adventures to report on through-out the year. Nice.

M1 Spy Report
For the second week in a row, the M1 spy patrol car has spotted riders out and about getting in MORE ekky k's.
Wazza B was spotted early this morning... how about you turn up tomorrow morning Wazza??? The bunch has been discussing whether or not to file a MRR (missing rider report) on you!!!
And what would you know - Grazza and Bec have been busted - YET AGAIN. This time reports are that they went for a leisure ride around the block this morning, which was concluding with a Haddock Drive. Sounds like some serious ekky training guys. Good work!!

The Ants Go Riding Two By Two.....
Riders in M1 land awoke on Thursday to a pretty bleak looking sky - a mixture of drizzle with a big dose of wind. Despite the gloomy sky M1 ants paired up to get some k's in.
Bec and Grazza were spotted heading out around 1pm. I don't know how far they got before they ran into the rain??? Thunder and myself headed out in the afternoon for a blustry marina circuit. I think Thunder was standing underneath the awning of his shop front when he was telling me that it wasn't raining. Yeah right!!
At least today, the sun is out and shining. Even if it is still windy.

Thursday Morning - Open For Debate
Ok M1 squadron. A question to debate amongst us. Who out there in M1 land would be interested in doing a Thursday morning medium/hard ride leaving maccas/hungry jacks at 5am or earlier? Proposed circuits are also up for debate.
The Thursday afternoon ride will remain UNCHANGED as this is the primary ride for new riders.
Input from ALL riders is encouraged and welcome. Share your thoughts and ideas and lets see what happens.....

The Honeymoon Ride
Ahh, love was in the air this morning. With the cyclone off the coast, Whiffos new love - Apollo Red, got to have a sleep in and had the morning off. Instead the yellow warhorse was pulled out of the garage in case we ran into rain. Very sweet Whiffo.
A smaller bunch today, for whatever reason who knows. Maybe it was the cyclone off the coast. Did I mention that already??? Big Lew from Rock Vegas joined us again and was riding strong again. The paceline picked up on the second lap onto Hanson Road but the bunch pretty much stayed together. Special K did blow BIG TIME at the single lane at the end of Hanson Road.
An altercation with a JJ Richards truck at the Dawson Highway turnoff added a bit of spice to the morning. Grazza is riding impressively at the moment - currently secret achiever in the pack. For two weeks now, Grazza has taken on Haddock drive and ridden it well.
Thunder - stop bouncing off those wheels in the kick - ESPECIALLY MINE!!!!!!!

Rider Profile - Colin Paterson (Scottie)

1. What bike do you ride (road)?
Trek Madone 5.1
2. What would be your dream bike?
Something Italian. Anything from Matt's shop
Trek Madone 5.1
2. What would be your dream bike?
Something Italian. Anything from Matt's shop
3. What's your day job?
Plant Manager of an Air Liquide Cryogenic Air Separation Unit.
4. What's your favourite ride?
I enjoy our round the block ride on Saturday mornings in the summer. I am sure locals take the route for granted but being a foreigner (and often being reminded of this fact in the M1 blog) I try not to, and constantly remind myself how lucky I am to be here in Queensland. I could never see too many gum trees, or too many Kangaroos behind the Calliope Historical Village, and watching the sun rise as early as 05:00 each morning still fills me with wonder.
In Scotland I used to ride alone. It may have been because my bike was not adorned with the prerequisite mudguards for group riding but it was more than likely because I was a mediocre rider. I did the occasional group ride but was often left alone many miles from home. A ninety minute circular route in the Scottish Borders on my trusty Cannondale was the order of the day back then.
I look forward to my Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday rides with a group of people whom I neither work with nor socialise with, but for a few hours each week I can hang out with, both on the bike, and on Saturdays over a coffee.
5. Most memorable biking experience?
Although I have struggled to cling on to the coat tails of the group at times, I am thrilled how far I have progressed in the twelve months I have been riding. Being able to complete a Saturday on the Targinnie Road with the hitters was memorable in itself.
6. Least memorable biking experience?
It was a Saturday morning in 2008, not long after I had started cycling with the group and I had braved the cold, wet weather to be at Tank Street for the 05:30 start. As it happened Marty (aka Farm Boy) was the only other person who had dared to venture out. At that time I had no idea that Marty was a former astronaut and had been severely injured in a space ship crash and whose body had been repaired at a cost of six million dollars. So when Marty enquired if we should ride the route together I naively yes. Forty kilometres later I was relieved to be sitting at McDonalds with Marty and a coffee after spending the previous 75 minutes trying to stay on his wheel.
Oh, and there was also the time I went over the handlebars at the marina. That cost me the price of a new helmet. Oh, and the time I was about to win the McDonalds sprint when Big Dave glided past me. That was not very memorable at all.
7. Bike rider you admire the most?
Robert Millar is a tiny Scottish climber who in 1984 became the only Briton to win the king of the mountains completion in the Tour de France. His fourth place in the 1984 Tour behind Laurent Fignon, Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond is Britain’s best ever result. Millar is the nearest Britain (or should I say Scotland) has had to a winner of one of the three major stage races. He finished second in the Vuelta in 1985 and 1986, second in the Giro in 1987 and fourth in the Tour in 1984.
Around 2005, he disappeared however. Rumours, seemingly unfounded, circulated that he had had a sex change – an easy claim given his love of long hair and his slight build – but their origins seem to be in a grudge by someone in Millar’s past. The truth is that nobody but Millar knows about that or what happened in his life, or even if he is still alive.
It was Robert Millar’s performances in the 80’s fuelled by Phill Ligett and Paul Sherwin’s commentary that inspired me to invest in my first road bike and my admiration for him has nothing to do with his penchant for women’s underwear.

Saturday Ride - 7th March
I love the Saturday rides over Summer. But only when I'm fit and feeling good. When you have a little motor like me, if you're anything but fit and feeling good, the Saturday rides are Hell Rides. For an obvious reason.
On the way out to Yarwun, Fabbio and Whiffo upped the pace and just about splintered the pack before the turn off. Good one boys.
Its good to see that Ken has given away the idea of the MTB on a Saturday morning and turned up for the bunchy. He even turned right with the hitters which was even better to see. It wasn't too good to see those long socks though Ken - you might want to loose them before next weekend, we kind of like to LOOK pro.
The addition of Haddock drive is claiming the scalps big time. Skyboy was the latest, he ended up rolling around on the dirt with cramps galore. Skirts who avoided Haddock included Thomas and Johan. Dear me boys.

The Hippo Ride
My last posting of a Thursday nite ride was not a very good one - The Messy Ride. Full credit to all the riders who showed last nite, for the first lap (at least) everyone was 10 times smoother. Sumo you would have been proud.
Team NZ turned up on the tandem and looked very fashionable in matching black and white, although Martina's young stoker was having a helmet issue with her pony tail. Its a common issue mate. Martina also spent the ride admiring the clear sky in front of him.
As we rolled out Ekka was giving young Fab a very technical debrief on saddles and positioning. My advice Fab, go for colour and just do more k's. Eventually you'll harden up in all the right spots!
As for me, I just want to ride slow cause I want to be a Hippo. Hey Thunder!

Spy Report
Dogs are talking that there was a fall during the Policeman's Ride this morning. Information is scarce but the Blogmistress is doing her best to seek out some reliable sources for some more details.
Likely fall suspects may include Rassey, Bec, Grazza and Joan who were all spotted by the M1 patrol car at Maccas.

Wednesday Ride - 4th March
It was an all out male only ride last nite with the Chris Brothers (Chris and Chris), Ekka, Martina and Thunder taking the trip around the block. From all reports, and as you would expect, the affair was a smashfest.
Chris A was busted on the trip out and was apparently commenting that the pace had jumped significantly since last years road season. I'm hearing you Chris - loud and clear.
Chris aka Fabbio pulled a flatty on the dirt section going over Haddock Drive. The mossies were rejoicing with glee at the sweaty bodies that had pulled up for a feed when Fab got the flat.

Tuesday Ride - 3rd March
The first thing I noticed this morning when I got up was how dark it was. The sun is no longer creeping up the skyline to meet the bunch as we roll out, instead, its starting to sleep in. At least it will soon be cooler.
The downside of having a holiday, time off the bike and too many vodkas is the suffering that occurs when you eventually get back on the bike. Yep, I was expecting sufferance this morning - and I got it. Have we always been going that fast around the first Paceline??? And was I really capable of pulling turns until the 2nd lap of Hanson Road??? Seems like a lifetime ago that I had some good form. But, I did choose to drink the vodka so I took my sufferance and kept quiet!!!
The right turn on Dawson highway and onto Haddock drive is a somewhat welcomed change. I'm sure when I regain some fitness Haddock will be a useful addition to my training however, today it just plain hurt.
And Johan - it was just a little froggie you ran over. Poor froggie.

My Fat Tyre Adventure
Wow. After 9 days away, I've finally returned from the adventure capital of the world - Queenstown New Zealand. The weather was not too kind at the beginning of the week, rain and max temperatures of 11. Luckily our conference soaked up most of the bad weather and when we finished on Wednesday the sun had come out.
After the Casino Royale Dinner on Wednesday nite, it was time for my organised MTB ride with Fat Tyre Adventures. My "tour guide" was Greg - and he is a great guy. I can say this because anyone who has seen me ride a MTB bike knows that I make a better roadie and Greg was very patient with me!! I was lucky enough that our 3hrs was one-on-one and Greg was full of some pretty good tips and advice. The landscape was brilliant - dirt road, around lakes, cow tracks, downhill, single track, 4WD tracks and a small bit of bitumen road.
I had an absolutely fantastic time and returned to the hotel completely buggered - probably from spending more time pushing the MTB bike up the hills than the actual riding!! If you're ever in Queenstown and have the opportunity, hook up with Greg. http://www.fat-tyre.co.nz/
Oh, our business coach Scott had organised to do a downhill ride on the Friday (with a different company) - I saw him Saturday at the airport on crutches and with a broken ankle. I've never been so grateful for being in one piece!!!
