Racing This Weekend

Its a big weekend of racing for M1 riders. Thunder, Zulu and LG are heading to brass monkey country to compete in the Cunningham Classic on Saturday morning. The event is 98k of tortureous hills and cross winds.

Best of luck to the boys heading south for racing and for those heading to Rocky for club racing.

Ekka Update

Latest news on Ekka is unfortunately not very flash. Ekka has been admitted to hospital with a blod clot on his brain.

All our thoughts are with you Ekka.

Saturday Ride Proposal

Due to the number of riders out of town racing or galvanting this weekend, Tugmaster has raised the idea of doing the Block Ride on Saturday morning for those that are interested.

Proposed time will be a 5:30am start from the usual spot of Hungries. Put your walm gear on guys. For more info, contact Tugmaster.

The Caught Out Ride

Someone turned the thermometer down last nite and forgot to tell me about it. I got caught out, being underdressed for the cold this morning. Yes, Tugmaster, I'm still whinging about the cold.

LG and Thunder were in pre-race mode preparing for this weekends Cunningham Classic and stopped pulling turns early in the piece. BSB tried to clean up Chris A in the coin slot kick, which added a bit of spice to the pack.

Brother Fergo was working hard over Haddock. Unfortunately Brother Fergo, that hill will never get any easier - no matter how much fitness comes back.

HandiCat gave the biggest false leadout before Cockatoo Dve in the history of the M1 rides before ducking down the shortcut alley. Just aswell you didn't hear the spray from the riders chasing HandiCat!!!

There will be an "elite" group ride who only stop twice on the ride or you can choose to have a social day, encourage young riders and take most of the day to complete the ride.

Ekka Update

Yesterdays' coffee shop ride was a shortened event due to an altercation involving a car on the Hanson Road paceline.

Ekka left hospital yesterday afternoon with a broken collar bone, bruised pelvis, bloodshot eye and a fair bit of skin missing from his face. Ekka's wife has arrived from Brisbane, so he's now in good hands.

Ekka's Colnago definately came out the best with only minimal damage to a few bits and pieces. We all wish you a speedy recovery Ekka, especially me - I'm hanging out to try some of that home made apple pie you were sprooking about!!

Race Results - 25th July

Yesterdays handicap race was a shortened event but a good number of riders still turned up for the A, B, C, D grade combined race.

SugarCat - or should that be HandiCat - was the best placed M1 rider in 4th spot. Too strong for her starting bunch, HandiCat rode a majority of the race solo and managed to jump on the back of the scratchies / chopping block bunch when they caught. Top effort.

Thunder was next best placed, coming home in 6th spot. LG and Tugmaster also finished the race in good positions. Well done guys.

The Hare and The Tortise Ride

Well its taken me this long to recover from the 1st lap of the Wednesday nite ride to be able to write a post about it.

It was a pretty decent turn out for the smashfest - I'm guessing everyone knew that Zulu still had the Flulu (again). I'm telling you Zulu, you need a feed. Welcome back to Chris A who has returned from the desert touring holiday.

Now, back to the smashing. Tugmaster pulled an absolute turn from hell up Redrover road to start the nite off. Ben 10 was next to take an impressive turn. And so it continued for the hitters.

The next time I saw Ben 10 he had used his alien watch and transformed into a hurling, vomiting monster on Kirkwood road. Too much hurt eh?

Be careful Bloomers, Haddock drive circuits become addictive after awhile. You'll end up turning into a hill climber with all those circuits you were doing. And LG, remember to charge your lights for Saturday - its still dark.

The Early Days

M1 riders have once again been scouting through the memory banks for photos from the early M1 days.

Heres the latest, courtesy of Tugmaster. A picture of Zulu in one of his early paceline sessions. His good form was showing right from the start - he is clearly in front of the next rider, and doing it easy.

At It Again....

Karen and Pete ventured to Townsville on the weekend just gone to compete in the 8th Paluma Push mountain bike race.

Karen completed the 65-ish km mostly dirt course in 4hr 43m 45s and took out 2nd place in her category and 5th female overall. She had a flat tyre along the way and fixed it and negotiated a technical, trying course, and still managed this result.
SEQ Pete - how did you go???

The ABC Ride

Well, it was a pretty ordinary start to the bunch ride this morning. Drizzle drizzle drizzle... at least it was a bit walmer than usual.

BSB and John the Teacher led the bunch out pretty firm through the railyards. The Ghost of Thomas didn't last long, sculking home at the Hanson Road lights. Being off the bike on holidays has made you soft Thomas.

The bunch split in half at the Dawson highway turnoff. Teacher John felt the pain on the way out to Haddock, getting spat out the back when Thunder snapped it on the hill before the climb.

All in all, a wet, soggy and cool ride. And yes SugarCat, the hills will still be there tomorrow.

Club Time Trial Championship

The 09 Rocky Individual Time Trial was held on the weekend at Ridgelands Rd.

B grade rider, Sean Vacher from Boyne / Tannum, claimed ought right fastest time over the 25k out and back course. Sean showed up the 4 A grade riders to take the title of Club Champion. See Rocky web site for full results.

Sean not only posted the best time but he did it in great style at 40.5 k/hr average.

Observations on Sean’s ride ( from 2008 ex ITT Club Champion )

Get your license / club membership a few days before the event. Half season ONLY.
Try to have no prior knowledge of the course.
Don’t bother with the gels, shotz, caffine or sports drinks. Water will be fine.
Don’t bother sitting on a trainers or warming up too much.
Train in a baggy jersey and borrow a nice fitting one on race day. ( M1 Jersey of course )
You don’t need tubulars and aero carbon wheels and fancy helmets to win. ( But they may help )
Just bolt on aero bars ( must have ) and make NO other adjustments. ( review seat height and angle, if you must fiddle with something )
Sprint out of the start like there is no tomorrow and blowing up is just a crazy myth.
Come within 40 meters of catching the minute man in front of you. ( Also good if that man in front is one of the quicker guys )
Put in a performance good enough to win your own grade and the better the grade above.

After the ride…
If asked how you went, shrug your shoulders and say “ Or ..OK ”
Crack a cold stub for post ride recovery.

Regards, the Zulu.

P.S. I’ve taken notes and am throwing out my old routine.

Sunday Spotting

The roadie spotters were out and about yesterday catching M1 riders sneaking in the ekky Sunday k's.

First to be spotted were Whiffo Dad and Whiffo Son out near Bunnings mid afternoon.

2nd to be spotted were team Blue Thunder later that evening. Our resident Flying Scotsman was quick on the tex to report the sighting. Well done.

Reports were also flowing in that a bunch of 5 - Gumnut Baby, SugarCat, LG, Tugmaster and Woody - headed out around 3pm and clocked up some decent Sunday Hundy k's.

Could it be that the pace set by team White Lightening allowed them to remain undetected by the Sunday Spotters???

The Eskimo Ride

Officially, it was ABSOLUTELY freezing this morning. Whiffo was the official temperature guage on this mornings ride due to LG's Garmin having memory black outs - must have been the cold.

This mornings ride saw the return of a couple of ghosts. The Ghost of Thomas and The Ghost of Jordy. It must have been summer time the last time Jordy rode as he was still wearing summer kit. Finally for once, I think the Tugmaster admitted it was cold this morning. And could it be that it was just too cold for Popey this morning as he was missing from the bunch????
It was one for all and all for one as the M1 squadron headed out to the freezer. I think we all needed moral support for the cold that was awaiting us. As Whiffo counted down the degrees as we rode further out of town, we officially hit zero just before the base of Haddock.

I think this morning everyone was grateful to get to maccas for a walm brew. But who would be caught dead wearing socks like that????

Product Of The Week

M1 Cycles must be in sunshine mode again with this latest product. For only $15 you too can look like a complete professional gumby!!!

Apparently the brakeless bmx boys reckon these glasses are the "bomb". If you ask me, I'm not so sure, but I do think they suit Thunder to a tee - especially given the gumby accessories he added to White Lightening! You be the judge.

The Mission Ride

My mission, should I choose to accept, was to complete two full laps without missing a single rotation on the Thursday nite ride. Did I accept - of course. Did I complete the task - not really.

Thunders' flat on lap one saw Scooby Doo take over the dog rollover. Although Ekka had given Scooby Doo another name that ended in Hound, Scooby Doo is far easier to spell and doesn't require a large amount of google skills.

Kermit had small gear syndrome on the second lap which sent the surgio wobbles through the pack. But all stayed upright for the ride.

Tuesday Ride - 14th July

Ahhhh. At last, some walmer weather. And true to form, the M1 fighter pilots turned out in force for a Tuesday smash. Some were earlier than others, and some - not mentioning any names - just made it on time.

The paceline was a testosterone full event. LG has been slack with his statistical report, but with the good conditions, the pace felt firm. Well, it felt firm to me, but maybe my legs were still recovering from the White Lightening adventures??? And, I really really really wish that someone at the Port would fix that road. It makes my butt wobble.

Fergs is still looking for his missing form and pulled a flattie along Kirkwood. That's what you get for being a Kirkwood Kat Fergs. Full credit has to go to Kermit... I mean Kelvin, for his efforts over the last few rides - venturing into the freezer and attempting Haddock on the Saturday and Tuesday ride is nothing to be sneezed at.

Laugh It Up

Ever heard of the saying "plumbers taps"?.... That would describe the maiden voyage for White Lightening. Deciding to take a trip around the block on Saturday afternoon, I had thoughts of it being a relatively easy, breezy event. Was I mistaken.

In short, it was a trip from hell. After the ride, the following was discovered:
1. We had 80 psi in both tyres. Personally, I'm a 120 kind of girl.
2. The front seat was too high causing the pilot to push a way too ENORMOUS gear for my little legs.
3. The computer was set up with the wrong tyre circumference which gave us false average speeds and distances. Just to add some mental torture to the event.

Having made some minor adjustments, White Lightening ventured out for a much more enjoyable and successful ride on Sunday. We're coming for you Blue Thunder.....

Prepared For Launch

Three, two, one, ready for take off. The brakes are bodgey fixed and White Lightening is about to make her maiden voyage this afternoon.

Just not sure about the gumby carry pack and the gumby side mirror. Just hope we're not gumby riders!!

Saturday Ride - 11th July

Its always a good sight to watch the fighter pilots come into land at the start of the bunch ride. The more pilots coming into the land, the better the ride turns out to be. A majority of pilots must have been communicating before the ride as 95% of the squadron was in M1 kit.

Depsite a number of hitters being missing from the pack, the paceline was still a reasonable effort. You did well Scottie????

The bunch split pretty evenly at the Haddock / Kirkwood turn point. Its a good thing we girls have no balls. Thank goodness for Grazza's manpower and the Sally Shortcut's - what would I have done without you Grazza?

Ferg was on his new Cannondale beast this morning. All eyes will be on Ferg to see how fast he can get his fitness back. With the juice he was drinking at Maccas this morning - it shouldn't be long.

Greyhound, IJ and Fossil were also spotted doing some TT training around the block this morning. Too keen for me boys.

Calliope to Biloela - Results

Congratulations to all who raced the Calliope to Biloela Classic on Sunday.

To everyones credit, all M1 riders who started the race in the cold and windy conditions, finished. Special mention has to go to Lord Garmin who claimed 3rd spot in the category 3 division.

Category 1 - IJ 7th
Category 2 - Johann 7th, Zulu 9th, Thunder 10th
Category 3 - LG 3rd
Category 4 - Kittstar 6th, SugarCat 7th, Frikky 10th, Ekka 11th
Category 5 - Bloomers 4th, Have a Chat 7th

Job well done guys. Full results are of course available through the Rocky club website.

Product Of The Week

Our favourite roadie store is now stocking a new range of sunglasses that are sure to make you look good on and off the bike.

There are even a few with lenses that change according to the amount of light you are riding in - perfect for the early morning and late afternoon rides.

Make sure you're seen in a pair soon!

Tuesday Ride - 7th July 2009

Only a small group turned up for this morning’s paceline (almost one less after BSB forgot his water bottle!), and that’s fair enough after the treacherous Bilo ride.

Although we missed Matty’s firm presence today the paceline was still a tidy affair, if slightly slower than usual. Bec and Cat were definitely in recovery mode so opted for a bit of a roll off the back. But there were no surprises coming into the Marina though with Johann leading the way well ahead.

In sympathy with the Bilo legends amongst us none of us did any hills this morning (that’s my excuse anyway!), except for BSB who bravely faced Kirkwood on his own.
A return welcome to Craig (Ferg) who it turns out is my old neighbour from Barney Point!

Cheers,
Tugmaster

Calliope to Biloela... Good Luck

Following is a message from the King to all the M1 riders lining up tomorrow for the 98k race from Calliope to Biloela.

Remember all that you have learnt from when you first started riding, don't drop the wheel and above all have fun and enjoy yourself.

It doesn't matter what grade you race, if you win, come in with the bunch or roll across the line by yourself. If you finish the race with a feeling of satisfaction knowing that you have given all that you had - then you are a winner and have done yourself and the M1 colours proud.

The King - Matty Thunder Jenkin

The Coffee Shop Ride

Despite the cold, this morning saw the biggest turn out for a Saturday morning roll since the block rides finished at the beginning of the road season. Was it because everyone was keen to float the legs before tomorrows race.. or was it just because everyone loves riding in the cold??? Whatever the reason, the big bunch was great and the conversation was even better.

Dog rollover was the order of the day for the 40k float through the marina, spinniker park, redrover and kirkwood. Scottie found the secret short cut to get ahead of the bunch for the Maccas line up.

The bunch rolled in with Fab taking the kick in front of Fossil and IJ. The Blue Thunder was not far off the pace. There was a lot of jousting and bantering happening at Maccas with excitement building for tommorows race to Biloela.

Landed....

Let it be known to all riders in M1 land that the White Lightening Beast has all but been assembled. Be watching the streets for the red and white streak to scream past you at Lightening speed.

Watch out Blue Thunder. Your days of reign are numbered.

The Welcome Back Ride

Last nites ride saw the return of a couple of M1 riders who have been missing from the pack for a bit - Welcome back Scottie, Have-A-Chat and Fergs. Oh, nice Holden Green bike Fergs.

Fab had done some jersey shopping whilst away in Brisbane, but he must have forgotten to take his sunnies off when he bought his new Oakley jersey. I gave up trying to read Scotties new jersey. Its not looking good for me, A. I can't understand Scottie when he talks. B. I now can't read Scotties jerseys. I give up!

In the end - Fab and Fossil gained a decent break on the bunch coming into Spinniker. It would have been a great tussel for the kick at the finish.

Special mention has to go to Ekka for his Wednesday nite effort. On the first lap of Haddock, Ekka punctured and being the great bunch that we are - we kept scrambling to the top without him. Obvioulsy he made it back safe - he was on the ride last nite.

Wednesday Nite Ride - 1st July

The new financial year was welcomed in by riders of the M1 bunch with the usual Wednesday nite smash. Speculation before the ride revolved around the new beast that has been ordered by the King. Shall we just call it - White Lightening??

When you see a new rider to the bunch turn up for the Wednesday smash, you kind of wonder at the start where they will be in an hours time. To Gif's credit - he did well.

Ben 10 was once again in fine form for the bunches first trip up Haddock drive. Whiffo snuck out early and met the bunch at the top of the climb - smart move Whiff. I will remember Whiff that you are flying to Sydney this weekend. K1 and K2 took the Kirkwood short cut for the bunch lap two - we had our excuse!!

The bunch split on lap three with only LG and Thunder heading out into the freezer for the final lap.

Another great ride guys.

Pssst.....

Something big, new and exciting has just landed at M1 Cycles - and it starts with a C. Any guesses??

I'll give you a hint. CANNONDALE. Was that a big enough hint? Matty is now the local dealer for all Cannondale bikes - Road, MTB, Leisure and Time Trial. The first delivery of bikes has been made to the shop today, so if you're looking for something high quality and a little different from the pack, Cannondale may be a choice for you.
