There are two things I remember from this mornings ride. The first was the paceline along Hanson Road - In, In, In, In, In, break for the Tandem, In, In, In, In, break for the Tandem. It was a big bunch, which meant lots of In calls from the back and a few swerves from those pulling turns - Kermmie, hold your line!
Not only was it a big bunch, but it was a record pace aswell. 41.33k/hr for the total 13k paceline. If that wasn't impressive enough, from Stickmakers to Spinniker park, the average was 44.99k/hr - just aswell Chris A was holding everyone back!! As you suspected Zulu, there was definately a surge in the pace!
The bunch pulled up for a photo shoot at the top of Redrover Road & Dawson Highway. Thunder must have wanted to get a picture of Scotties "Andy" legs before he leaves for Melbourne.
The second thing that is vividly in my mind from this morning was walking out to the table at Maccas with my Mocha. What was so memorable about that??? Nothing. But being told by HandiCat that a Mocha has approx 400 calories sure burst my bubble!!
Ahhh, the last Mocha ride. It sure was a sweet one.

Thursday Ride - 27th August
The bunch was alive last night with the sound of trash talk. Before the ride started, the sprinters and wannabee sprinters of the pack were debating gear changes for the 150m ramp sprint. Personally, if you're running SRAM Red you don't need to consider gear changes - you can just lock and load.
Even after rolling out, the trash didn't stop. Sprinters and wannabees were mock sprinting off the front of the pack around the front of the water front. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but if it were anyone less than the King "mocking" around, they would have copped a serve?????
Young Dominic had a bit of one-on-one coaching from Thunder along the way. Good to see you hang in all the way Dom. Dom and Pyney even managed to attack off the front of the pack on the first lap... oh, that's right, the rest of us were stopped by traffic!!!
Scottie was in his usual Scottish form.... I did manage to interpret "last ride, 2nd lap, beer".. I'm sure Scottie will know what I mean.

Product Of The Week

Unless you've got plenty of cash, having a fettish for cycling bling can be an expensive addiction. I guess that's why many roadies have a fettish for this weeks product of the week - SOCKS!!!
At the bargain buy of 3 pairs for $30, you too can add to your sock collection with some of these latest arrivals.
Don't forget all non-M1 jerseys and knicks (and Skins) are still $30 each!!

Wednesday Warriors
True to it's reputation, the Wednesday nite is a defining ride. Always a story to be told.
Adds ons dropped in all over the place, Jamie, Wiffo, Chris appearing out of the dark.
Ben 10, Fab , and Fergs were in charge of keeping the pace high. Too high for many, but you don't get hard by riding soft. Trying hard were 1 lap wonders: Ben 10's Dad, Brad, Mr & Mrs Zulu and a sick King of M1.
Rubble on Kirkwood claimed Fabio after the first lap.. After crashing at speed he was still composed enough to set about repairing a 12mm cut in the sidewall of his rear tyre.
No one seemed to have any folding money to lay over the slice. ( I had a $50 but was not letting go of it.)
Wiffo came good with a $5 note , allowing big Chris to get home. Having a nurse as co-pilot, and more spares, we did the slow roll with Fab to help him make it home.
The diehards sped off into the night for the 2nd lap.
Zulu.

1. What bike do you ride?
Well I am the proud new owner of a Cannondale Synapse Hi Tech. Got it a month ago from M1- and loving it. Got my credit card taken off me as a result - I didn’t have clearance from the treasurer at home to make the purchase. She knew I was in the market but she didn’t know how far in I was.
2. What would be your dream bike?
2. What would be your dream bike?
That bike the Goodies rode – the Trandem. I’d be at the back, and anyone of those girls that Matt sends me pictures of can fill up the other two seats. We could go riding out in the country , do some hill climbs…..did you say dream or dream bike?
3. What's your day job?
3. What's your day job?
I have just returned to Gladstone and am working at the Gladstone Ports Corporation – RG Tanna Coal Terminal on the Process Control Upgrade Project – I’m a sparky who sits at a desk.
4. What's your favourite ride?
4. What's your favourite ride?
Having just got seriously into the sport over the last couple of years, I haven’t really done too many classics. I can’t wait to get back to Tassie in a few years time ( that’s home) and do some touring around the state. Great country for riding in Tassie – rolling hills quiet back roads, views – It’s Gods country. And no the cold does not kill; It’s just a little fresher that the Queensland climate, makes you feel alive. I do remember some of the buzzes we had while travelling in Europe in a kombi; driving to the top of the mountain ranges and getting the bikes off the back and flying down the other side. The bikes got stolen in Amsterdamn though. I was distracted for a while, man.
5. Most memorable biking experience?
5. Most memorable biking experience?
Too rude to be blogged. Just ask Fergo.
6. Least memorable biking experience?
6. Least memorable biking experience?
Well, good question, Once while living back home with the folks in Burnie, Tassie - I had just returned from overseas. I had been out for the day somewhere and bumped into an old mate. We had decided to head out for a beer that night but I had to call past home to get changed first. We were greeted by Dad at the door who had just been out on his new mountain bike and he had had a bingle. His injuries were the normal skin off here and there but by far the worst was that he had hit a large rock and had slid forward off his seat and had sctrotally connected with the neck of the bike. Without saying hello, Dad had whipped down his reg grundies and showed us the damage. I hadn’t seen my old mans ball sack before in living memory and definitely had not seen that type of injury - my mate had never met my Dad. Anyway we were late for the beers as we had to take Dad to the hospital for a few stitches.
7. Bike rider you admire the most?
7. Bike rider you admire the most?
Danny Clark – he is from Tassie. He won five world championships and a silver Olympic medal in 1972. He was named as one of the best six day event track riders of all time. While we were growing up along the NW coast of Tassie during January / Feb there is a running , riding, and chopping carnival series. There are about five or six day and sometimes day / night carnivals. We used to go to them all ( this was prior to the old man smashing his sack – Dad was a runner). Danny Clark was amazing. He was the dominant scratch handicapper for a good 15 years and for a couple of season had to start back by himself behind scratch. His ride in the Burnie Wheel in 1977 ( I can remember the buzz and atmosphere and have seen the footage of the ride more recently) it was absoutley incredible. The main pack had given up and one some front markers were more than 100m in front on the bell lap, they looked like they had it all sorted. So it was Clark motoring home he hardly touched the track as he flew around and won by a tyre. The commentator and crowd went crazy, the commentator rates this as his most memorable sporting moment of all time.

Late Edition (again) - Saturday Ride
Wow! What a ride! I led from the start at Fordys, was first to the top of Auckland Hill, then absolutely smashed the Paceline. I don’t even recall anyone passing me throughout the entire circuit. Hammering down the Dawson Highway it was me first to Haddock, then me again first to the top on BOTH laps! Nobody passed me the entire ride. What a feeling! I even won the Macca sprint, rolling into the carpark victorious I gave a little Wiggles finger salute, feeling on top of the world. Just unbeatable…
But then, like awaking from a bad nightmare in a cold sweat, a sea of green slowly came into focus as I stood my Madone in the rack. What are all those voices? Then slowly the realisation hit me, the pack was already enjoying their double-whipped skinny mocha lattes.
I had in fact been half an hour early and, wondering where all the riders were, completed the entire circuit on my own! But still, you have to take these victories as they come, no matter how shallow. For it may be a long time before I reach the top of Haddock awaiting my fellow riders. J
Cheers,
Tumaster

Late Edition - Thursday Nite Ride
The Thursday night ride was minus a number of regulars and totalled only five riders including Scottie, Popey, Dominic, Kelvin and Doctor Ben.
The pace must have been too slow for Doctor Ben as he made an excuse of an emergency colonoscopy after only one lap and departed the group. Kelvin did not last much longer citing some ecky kms gained earlier in the day.
The three musketeers carried on in the dark; humbled by the larger size of the Gladstone Cycles group (My wife has always assured me that size does not matter). Looking forward to seeing more of you out this Saturday.

State Road Title Results
(1).jpg)
In extremely hot and dry conditions, Matty and IJ took on the states best in Kelbar yesterday for the State Road titles.
In Masters 2, IJ had a VERY hotly contested field. In the tough conditions, an attack on one of the major hills saw 7 riders clear the main bunch and stay away for the remainder of the race. Unfortunately, IJ was unable to make the break, but came home in a very creditable 9th position.
In the combined Masters 3 & Masters 4, the pace was on from the start of the race. Despite positioning himself well in the opening k's Matty also suffered badly in the tough conditions and failed to finish the 76ks.
The course and conditions are as punishing as they come in Queensland racing. Well done guys.
The Adventure Rider - Day 1 & 2
I think its true to say that Woody's had a couple of very hard days in the office since he left Mackay. Let me explain his story so far....
Day One - Woody's adventure started in Mackay when he rolled for 30k's with the Mackay bunch which just so happened to contain ex rider Ron (Cervelo rider, friend of Glen tri-boy). Total k's for day one were 196ks, of which 160ks was straight head wind. And yes, the 30ks he did with the bunch was in fact the 30k tailwind section! Two brown snakes along the way kept Woody's eyes open and the cadence fast!!
Day Two - Well, if Woody's head was wobbling on day one, it was well and truly in bobble mode on day two. 226ks in total from Bowen to Townsville. A de-tour on the road saw Woody take an extra 20k trip before getting to Townsville. At 7pm last nite Woody was just checking in to his accommodation.
I think its going to be a long trip to Cairns.....

The State Road Race
This weekend will see riders from all over the state converge on Kelbar (west of Brisbane) to contest the State Road titles.
M1 will be represented by Thunder in Masters 3 (approx 76ks) and IJ in Masters 2 (approx 92ks). Both will have hotly contested fields of over 25 riders.
The course is extremely difficult, with the most challenging climb being less than 750m from the start. Both grades will go over the climb 3 times, and no doubt this will be the spot in both divisions where attacks are made and the race possibly won. Best of luck guys.
In local club racing, riders are once again out at the Kremese course. Don't forget racing starts at 2pm, and volunteers are always greatly appreciated.
Enjoy your weekend of riding.

Make An Offer
Despite the 50% off sale, the walls at M1 are still full of jerseys' and knicks. Not only has the King lost his hair, he's also lost his mind - Matty's asking everyone to "make an offer" on any jersey or knicks on the shelf.
Now, what's a "reasonable" offer you might say??? Well, Matty thinks anything above $30 is a "reasonable" offer. I kidd you not. Now those of you who have been scouring through the jerseys would know that there are some on the rack that retail for well over $120.
The King says cash only, so be quick guys before Matty comes to his senses.
The offer doesn't apply to M1 kits or Skins - sorry Tugmaster!

The Adventure Rider
Looking for a way to get in a few k's before a big race? Just do what Woody does - Credit Card ride from Mackay to Cairns.
Tomorrow Woody is heading to Mackay to leave on a 4 day cycling adventure - on his own!- up the north coast, covering around 720ks.
Day One - Mackay to Bowen. Day Two - Bowen to Townsville. Day Three - Townsville to Caldwell. Day Four - Caldwell to Cairns.
All I can say is that with that many k's in his legs in 4 days, watch out when he's back in the pack! Keep watching the blog, Woody will be sending pics from his credit card adventure!!
Last Rays Of The Winter Sun Ride
The 7 riders arriving at the bottom of Haddock in the twilight, got a big reminder the days are getting longer now and very quickly.
Newer riders Brad and Kelvin looked toasty, still in their winter attire.
The temp last night was perfect. My arm warmers stayed in my jersey pocket and will be left in the draw next week. Fab and Fergo rode like nothing fazed them, which is normal for those guys. Wiffo also letting his riding do the talking, showing that dedication is when you incorporate a Wednesday hit out into your ride home from work.
Regular Chris keeps racking up cred as a with yet another Wednesday nite showing.
Lord and Lady Garmin seen @ Kirkwood intersection on our 2nd lap…must be keeping in the family ? How many laps did they do ? I wonder.
LG's bingle at Cunningham seems to have only made him hungrier.
Lastly 3 tips for any aspiring Wed nite hitters: ( Brad is getting this down pat and is doing well )
1. Don't go to the front.
2. If you end up on the front, don't stay there.
3. NEVER DROP THE WHEEL !
See you round the ridges,
Zulu.

Only Days Away
.bmp)
As the heading suggests, something big - well, in my world anyway - is coming. The full range of 2010 Trek bikes is due to be launched to the public tomorrow (according to Kerry Trek Rep). Already, there are snippets about the 2010 Madones available.
For those interested, the 2010 Trek 6 Series Madones are 150grms lighter and 10% stiffer in the bottom bracket. Great techno info, but not really high on my priority list. Higher on my list however is the goss that ALL 6 Series Madones have CUSTOM paint jobs - thats right. YOU choose your colour and decals' - no more stock standard colours. Delivery times have been set at 3 weeks from the day your order is placed with Trek. Excited? You can bet I am!!!
Thunder - take note of the custom paint job...... The Project One website has already been updated for the 2010 madone. Definately worth a look. http://www.trekbikes.com/

Tuesday Ride - 18th August
All I can say is, Lord Garmin is BACK!
A good bunch turned out this morning expecting a more sedate paceline, due to the recovering LG joining us just before takeoff. As we cruised around Auckland Pt the following quote was heard:
“Just take it easy Honey!”
And then as the paceline got under way Cat turned to the pack and said “Keep it to 35!”. Well, obviously nobody listened to her, least of all her hubby, because we averaged a solid 39.88 for the paceline, with the Spinnaker sprint being toughly contested by Greyhound, LG, Whiffo et al. Naturally I was too far back to pick the winner…but great to see LG back on the road.
Almost all turned right to Haddock with a few *ahem* hard working types opting for the Kirkwood/Cockatoo circuit.
Also, its time to welcome a new rider Andrew to the pack - on his carbon GT. And I think he’ll be a stayer as he was on the pace for the entire ride straight up! Well done.

The Bike Shop
In Australia we call in the Yellow Jersey, in France its called the Maillot Jaune and the Americans call it Mellow Johnny.
With good reason, Lance's bike shop in Austin, Texas is called Mellow Johnny's - funny that hey? It's every roadies dream come true as there is an associated coffee shop right next door to the bike shop - how convenient.
The shop also offers commuters who use the shop a place to store their bikes and free shower facilities!!! Have a bo-peep around their website www.mellowjohnnys.com

Sunday Ride Event
This Sunday, M1 riders are invited to ride from Miriam Vale to Gin Gin to support cystic fibrosis rider Rick Faulks in his ride from Cairns to Brisbane.
The ride will be about approx 100k and at a reasonable pace - Rick has already ridden half way down the coast!! - so good miles for those wanting a long Sunday ride.
Drivers will also be needed to get the M1 riders back to Miriam Vale. If you're interested, contact LG or HandiCat for more info. LG, if you could post times etc on the blog for those that are keen.

Product Of The Week
Ok, so the weather is warming up and we're all starting to shed a few layers, but this weeks product of the week has been one of the most sort after and requested by M1 riders - and FINALLY they've arrived.
Toe warmers are now in stock at M1!!!! For the remainder of the cool weather, until the winter gear is packed away, a pair will cost you $30. One thing is for certain, if you don't wear them this season, you'll be sure to use them next year!!
One For The Oldies
If you're over the age of 35, then your eligible for this years Maryborough Masters. Commencing on Friday the 2nd of October and concluding Sunday 4th of October, its the last big weekend of racing for the season.
The weekend includes the infamous ramp sprint, time trial, road race and kremese. You must have a current cycling licence to participate - no day licences allowed.

Post Ride Recovery
Refueling your body - particularly after a smashfest - is as important as fueling your body before a ride. There are literally thousands of articles in magazines and on the net regarding the combinations of proteins and cabohydrates that are required to maximise recovery.
LG and HandiCat have been searching the net and have found this interesting little receipe. Mix the following ingredients in a blender:
250ml of milk;1 whole egg;30g of whey protein;1 banana;1 tbl spoon of psyllium husk;1 tbl spoon of wheat germ;2 tbl spoons of Milo;2 tbl spoons of rolled oats;3 tbl spoons of frozen berries;
If you give it a go, let us know how you go. I could be tempted....

Pairs Time Trial Results
My sources tell me that two M1 teams competed in the pairs time trial in Rockhampton on the weekend. A secret handicap at the caves course and in windy conditions, the race was no doubt a challenge.
Ben 10 and Sean Veacher - the solo TT winner from a few weeks ago - took out 2nd place overall. Sean, I'm needing a blog name for you - assistance please.
Tugmaster and Bloomers also teamed up and placed a respectable 6th place. I know Tugmaster was definately pleased with his effort and result.
Well done guys, good to see the M1 squadron being represented at so many races this year.

Sunday Riders Wanted

The Ekky Ride
If you think you're the only one doing ekky k's to get some form onboard to make the bunch rides easier, think again. This mornings bunch ride was a true revelation of the ekky trainers. Today there were M1 riders doing Blocks, Haddock and k's before the bunch ride and riders doing Haddocks and k's after the bunch ride - no wonder I'm exhausted just thinking about it!!!!
Welcome to Dominque - the young rider on the Trek flat bar. For your first bunch ride, you did well.
This mornings town bunch was a big one with probably the biggest bunch we've seen all winter. Come on Summer. The count down is on for the return of the Summer Saturday Smashes. Zulu was a bit disorientated on the Hanson Rd paceline and took a wrong turn at the roundabout. I agree Zulu - thank goodness you were on the right lane.
A decent bunch ventured out to Haddock for some extra hurt. Today I was trying to practice what I preach so well to new riders - just keep banging your head, eventually you get there and you get stronger along the way. Must try to bang a bit harder.
Tugmaster slept in - with no excuse - and rolled to maccas to join the crew for a brew. Jokes were on HaveAChat and her lack of breathing ability when calling a squeaky 'in' during paceline!!
Grazza - I'M STILL WAITING FOR YOUR RIDER PROFILE!!!!! Just reminding you. Apologies to John - he is a train driver, not a teacher. Perhaps the nickname Puffing Billy is more than apporpriate???

Product Of The Week
.jpg)
This weeks product is an invention by one of our own M1 riders - Alison.
Designed to provide maximum visability in dark riding or running conditions, the "Belt Up" high viz sports belts and anklets are now available from M1 Cycles. At a cost of just $20, its a cheap way to add a great deal of safety and as the picture shows, they're pretty high viz.

Tour De Chaplain Results
The Tour de Chaplain was held on Saturday 1 August and was a wonderful day as around 40 riders set out to ride from Gladstone to Rockhampton to raise money for School Chaplaincy.
A small group of dedicated riders completed the ride with only one stop to shed some layers. Some others were sore and sorry by the end but everyone had a smile on their face after a glorious day of cycling.
Thanks should go to all who rode particularly those who could have ridden quicker but chose to ride along at a social speed encouraging young riders into the lifestyle and sport of cycling.

Show Day Riding
Well, well. The M1 tandems had their first show down on the road today with a trip around the block. Team White Lightening ventured out early to gain some extra k's before hooking up with Team Blue Thunder.
Meeting up at Yarwun, team Blue Thunder were in the lead with an average of 38k/hr. Team White Lightening had an average of 35k/hr - but this included the Targinnie stretch. I will mention that team Blue Thunder avoided this leg. Result One = Team Blue Thunder.
The next match up was on the River Ranch hills, Calliope hills and Haddock drive. With team White Lightenings trendy side mirror, I was able to watch team Blue Thunder go out the back door - rapidly. Result Two = Team White Lightening.
The competition continues.
The tandem travellers ran into HandiCat, Tugmaster and Woody who had ventured out for a stroll around the block also. It appears that whilst the LG mouse is away, the HandiCat forgets the hill instructions!!

Cunningham Results
It was certainly a very mixed bag of results for the four M1 riders who took on the Cunningham Classic on the weekend just gone. Conditions this year were unusually favourable for the riders with the wind being pretty much non existant - that would have been a welcomed change.
Masters A - Zulu rode well and came in with the main bunch to take a top 10 place. Thunder on the other hand had a lonesome 60k time trial, being spat by the bunch on the first major climb of the day. Needless to say, chocolate and sweet chilli chips are once again out of the diet!! Yeah right.
Masters B - What do I say here. LG certainly had good form going into the race, chased hard and rejoined the bunch after being ridden off the back on the climb, was 200m from the finish and looking good for the kick..... Unfortunately, LG was taken out in the final 200m by a careless action from another rider. LG is certainly worse for wear with some major skin missing and from what I hear, some pretty attractive brusies.
Elite B - Little is known about Greyhounds first open scratch race except he was rumored to be chasing every break that went off the front of the pack - definately Johann's signature. Greyhound also came in with the leading pack of his division and also claimed a top 10 placing.
In local racing, I believe Bloomers ONCE AGAIN placed 2nd in D grade. I forsee C grade awaiting you before the end of the season Bloomers!!!

Read of The Year
On a recent long plane trip, I had the pleasure of getting stuck into Lance's latest book - "Lance Armstrong - The world's greatest champion".
Now being a Lance fan, I may be a bit biased, but all that aside, I can tell you that the book is definately worth a read. Written by John Wilcockson this year, the book takes the perspective from Lance and those around him from his early childhood to his return to pro racing earlier this year.
A brilliant story.

Tuesday Ride - 4th August
Ok, ok. So the Blogmistress has been a little slack with the posting over the last week. Sorry guys - back on deck now.
Stu the Barber - who everyone seems to know - was welcomed to the Tuesday bunch with 3 lectures about calling ''in'' on the paceline. That was before the ride even started. I'm sure he got the hint about paceline ettique.
I'm pleased to say that the mice have now left home as the bitumen has been smoothed on the way out to Spinniker park. That has turned into one fast piece of road. I think when LG is back on board we'll see some pretty quick averages.
The bunch was pretty soft at the Dawson highway split with only Brother Fergo, Bloomers and Thunder venturing out to Haddock.
And yes Zulu, I did think that a 45 minute run was going counteract the vodka sodas I consumed the nite before. Positive + negative = sore legs on Tuesday morning.
