Labour Day Handicap

The Labour Day Handicap is on this Monday in Rockhampton. The race is 30ks on a relatively flat out and back course. Make sure you're well and truly warmed up before your start - you'll need it as the pace is always red hot from the start!

Racing will start at 8:30am from Ridgelands Road. No day licences - so be organised.

Oh, and be warned - if you haven't raced this year in Rocky, the Handicapper is onto you and you'll be "severely handicapped" - just see the Rocky Club website! Just in case anyone was looking for an easy ride - or an easy win this year.

Product Of The Week

If you have any family or friends who are looking for a bike that offers a fast ride but with the comfort of a more upright riding position, than the FX series of Treks is definately the bike to recommend.

Given the strength of the Aussie dollar at the moment, Trek Australia have just announced a drop in the prices of the FX series bikes. They are as follows:

7.0FX was $499 NOW $399
7.1FX was $599 NOW $499
7.2FX was $799 NOW $749
7.3FX was $999 NOW $899
7.5FX was $1,499 NOW $1,399
7.6FX was $1,799 NOW $1,699

Mountain Bike SPECTACULAR

Can everyone please comment on how SPECTACULAR the Sunday morning mountain bike rides are - I'm getting tired of sounding like someone trying to coherse you out of money in side show alley!

The Dirty Rats are mounting up again this Sunday, leaving from the Choice Petroleum petrol station on the Sun Valley roundabout at 6:30am.

Happy now Thunder - I mentioned SPECTACULAR in the title!

Tour Of Coleraine

Hmmm.. its kind of hard to know where this story starts. Was it driving to Hamilton in Victoria on Friday afternoon - the last hour and a half of the trip completely uphill? Or does it begin with the final 3k decent into Coleraine? Or perhaps realising that you're carrying more than 10kg than the riders beside you collecting race numbers - and they were all blokes? I'm hoping you're getting the picture I'm trying to paint.

Race 1 - For me it was 71ks. For Thunder it was 94ks. For both of us it was as windy as Spinnaker Park on a Thursday nite, it was as rainy as the Saturday morning Tuggy promised the rain was "just about finished" and as hilly as a scene from the Sound of Music.

The road out of town was about the distance of Haddock, but with no flat spots to recover - and it wasn't even a KOM! The first KOM was still another 10k down the road! It was a race of sufference for both of us. The longer you could suffer, the more pain you could tolerate, the longer you could hang on to the BACK of the pack. I won't mention the riders that were jumping from the front in both races!

In the end, I came home in 13th place in a field of 24 and Thunder came home in 29th place in a field of about 60.

Race 2 - Thunder's effort in the road race saw him line up for the Crit with badly scorched, cramping legs. Its difficult to back up for this type of racing with only 2 hours recovery between each race. It makes you tougher as a bike rider.

Highlight of racing on Saturday was watching the A grade field complete the crit. The peleton was like a swarm of well precisioned bees. You could hear them coming, before you could see them. And you know their going fast when the follow car struggles to keep pace through the corners!

I believe the Tour should be more appropriately named the Tour Of Bergsville. Was it worth it? You betcha. And as Damo Harris said - Victoria is DEFINATELY where the racing is at.

Saturday Racing

Racing this weekend is a Handicap at Yeppoon starting at 2pm.

Based on the performance of M1 riders in the time trial and the first race, I don't think Dunny will be doing the Gladstone riders any favours with good starting positions!

Good luck to anyone who is heading up.

The Odd Bod Ride

It was a bit of a strange one this morning.

Before the ride started there was discussion about whether or not to do the long paceline or the two short pacelines. It was decided to do the two short pacelines. We were pretty undecided. If anyone has an opinion on which paceline is tougher - please comment.

As the rain started, the bunch split up and went their own way. Chrissy A came down on the Port Authority roundabout on the first lap. Chris is ok, bike is ok. Just a few scuffs and scrapes. As Chris put it - the most painful thing was watching his bike slide along the bitumen.

Not much else to tell. I'm enjoying a cuppachino - 85 calories and all.

Racing Results - 17th April

Saturday afternoon was the first road race for the Rocky season with a scratch race at the Caves. The course was a little different this time as it included Barmoya Road - a 5.5k out and back berg feast. To add to the bergs was the usual blustry conditions, complete with cruel cross winds from all directions.

A grade - Dark Horse was the best place of the Gladstone riders, coming in behind Wormy and Spec to claim 3rd place. Thunder and Zulu rounded out the top 5. In his first race for the season, Bushy found the pace a little hot from the start and had a bit of a solo ride home. Don't worry Bushy - we've all been in that boat before!

B grade - The Silent Assassin looked like he had the goods throughout the first 40ks of the race. A few unsucessful breakaway attempts saw the bunch stay together until the last 10k. Unfortunately for Ray, he blew a tyre in the last 10k and DNF'.

C grade - The Dominator rode well for the first part of the race - remaining unnoticed in the bunch and getting a bit of x-wind on his chest. The pace eventually took its toll and Dom also had a bit of solo time to finish the race. The Dom very proudly texed that he came 3rd last! You rode well Dom. Flossy pulled off a 2nd place.

Weekend Riding

I've been assured - once again - that the MTB ride will DEFINATELY be on this Sunday. Leaving the Coffee Club at Tannum at 6:30am sharp.

Tomorrow, Pyney will be doing the block at 4:45am and the town bunch will leave Fordy's fish & chip shop at 6:00am. The paceline section will run straight down Hanson, right at Stickmakers roundabout and directly to Spinniker Park. Those not racing have the option of heading out to Haddock.

Racing tomorrow is at the Caves and is a 50k scratch race for A, B & C Grades. Due to roadworks, the race will actually go over and back the lovely little climb that hides on the school road.

The 3 Dog Night

As the group of 9 rolled out from the shop Thunder's last words - directed at the Zulu - should have given me comfort. "It won't be a hard ride", he said. But Zulu just stared right through him, like a hot steak knife through butter. I should have turned around and gone straight home then and there.

As the sun began to set in the west we got the green on the Calliope River lights and forged our way across the flats unhindered at a cracking pace. As we neared Yarwun the Zulu spearheaded the first attack on good sense by 'leaning out the mixture' and like a blur we make the turn off in no time. Dog rolls saw us across the paddock, but the hammer dropped at the top of Dog Hill with Slasher and Zulu making a fierce breakaway. After a brief spell at the back Thunder valiantly closed the gap on the terrible twosome with an epic display of tenacity akin to your Auntie's Terrier who just won't let go of your trousers.

Battered and bruised we made it to River Ranch where the Dominator launched up the hill like a scalded cat. I didn't see the dog chasing him but it must have been huge!

As we barrelled down the highway towards home a familiar fearsome bark was heard approaching from the bushes only to be cut short by the sound of Hyundai on fur. WHAM!!! We couldn't find the dog, but the poor girl driving the car was a little shaken. She did well in my opinion....

Slasher then decided he didn't need the small chain ring any more and completed Haddock and the reamainder of the ride in the 53. Wow, I bet he's sore today! Great to see Fabio back on the road, but ride of the night goes to the Dominator. Great work Dom.

Ave speed was a blistering 36.4

Tuesday Ride - 13th April

This mornings ride had a bit of everything in it - a bit of dry, a bit of wind, a bit of rain and an absolute TONNE of speed!! The new paceline circuit seems to be working quite well - it is definately quick.

First lap average was 41.6k/hr and the second lap was 44.2k/hr - finishing at Spinniker - no wonder the bunch splintered to pieces. I think the Silent Assassin takes the award today for best "splinter", just before the GPA roundabout on the second lap - impressive.

We're not going to talk about the Coin Slot kick this week. All I will say is that Bushy got it. End of story - I don't want to talk about it anymore!

Well done to Rob who ventured to the top of the Haddock extention for the first time. I will also add BSB, that you were climbing like a housebrick this morning, and not your usual self - especially given that even I beat you up the extention!

Product Of The Week

With winter - supposedly - on its way and the sun starting to sleep in, a little extra lighting never goes astray.

Matty has just stocked up on these new Topeak Headlux lights. Mounted to your helmet, this light has a rear red and front white light all in one - perfect for being able to see your speedo when doing dog rollovers in the dark! No more excuses now Thunder.

At $25, Topeak lights have done it again.

Time Trial Results

Congratulations to all who raced yesterday in Rocky. It was a very successful day out for all riders who made the trip. Despite the stifiling heat there were some very quick times and some happy riders at the end of the 20k time trial. The results are as follows:

A Grade - Big Lew 2nd and Dark Horse 3rd.
B Grade - LG 2nd.
C Grade - Tuggy 1st!!!!! It should be noted that this will be Tuggy's first and last ride in C grade for this year.

Thunder, Zulu and the Dominator also competed.

A special mention also has to go to Pyney who was the official M1 cheerleader. It was great to see you there Pyney, and your support was appreciated.

Full results and times will be available from the Rocky website http://www.rockhamptoncyclingclub.com/.

Next week is a graded scratch race at the Caves on the northern side of Rocky.

Comment Delay

The M1 Cycles Roadie Page was created because of the passion we all share for bike riding and racing.

Over recent days, comments have been posted on the blog by an un-named person. The person appears to have no other agenda than to create disharmony. As a result, all comments on the blog will now be moderated before they are posted.

Obviously, to those of us who have nothing to hide, we will continue to give POSITIVE and SUPPORTIVE comments.

LONG LIVE THE M1 BLOG.

The Coffee Shop Ride

Its kind of misleading to call this mornings ride "The Coffee Shop Ride" because a HUGE majority of the M1 roadies in town were a bunch of soft serves and just drove to maccas for a brew at 6:30am!!!!
Pyney, Joan and a mystery man headed out around the block and made it back safely. Week one done Pyney - I think the warm weather is going to disappear shortly though.

Comment of the day came from Tuggy - The rain's just about finished. I mite add that Tuggy was on the other end of the phone - nice and dry - looking at a somewhat misleading BOM site. It continued to pour down for the remainder of the town circuit and the entire time we were at maccas. Tuggy did redeem himself though when there were a couple of dry towels waiting for us at maccas!! Champion.

Most of the coffee shop discussion revolved around this afternoons time trial... the countdown is on and finally bets are being made.....

MTB Cancellation

Well, for a brief moment it was on, but after this mornings down pour - its now off again.

The Dirty Rats have put their pink skirts on and pulled the pin on tomorrow mornings MTB ride at Tannum.

The Roadie ride will still be on, leaving Bunny's at 5:30am.

Riding This Weekend

The choice is yours this weekend with plenty of options available.

Saturday morning: It was confirmed last nite that Pyney's Block Patriots will still be heading around the 60k block at 4:45am.

Altneratively, those that are racing - or just having a sleep in, like Rapunzel and myself - will be doing the town loop at 6am. The paceline will be short and there will be no Haddock drive - wahoo!! Ride leaves at Fordy's Fish and Chip shop.

Sunday morning: The dirty rat mountain bikers are back in action leaving the Tannum Coffee Club at 6:30am. Dark Horse will be lead out man for Sunday's bush ride. Apparently its going to be a SPECTACULAR!!!!

Roadies will be leaving Bunnings at 5:30am for the EASY 40k town loop.

All rides will of course finish with a brew at either Maccas or Tannum Coffee Club.

Around The Bay In A Day

Registrations are now open for this years Around The Bay In A Day ride in Victoria.

Numbers are limited and the registrations get taken up pretty quick. If you're interested go to www.bv.com.au/great-rides/20005

Online Memberships

The online registration process is now working for new riders needing to register and obtain their licence before racing.

Go to the following website www.cycling.org.au and select the membership tab. Follow the prompts for new membership registration.

The Pineapple Combo

From now until next Friday - the day before the first "real" road race of the season - Matty's offering all roadies a Pineapple Combo.

For two pineapples ($100), you'll get a new 10 speed Dura-Ace chain and bar tape fitted to your bike. If you haven't had your chain checked in a while and your bar tape's a bit on the nose, now would be the time to do something about it.

Bring in your pineapples and get your combo before next Friday!

The Dengue Ride

There were great expectations last nite for a huge number to turn up for the smash around the block. Alas, only six of us rolled out from the shop, collecting Dead Wood along Hanson Road. You scored a new name now Woody cause I thought you were riding in the box last nite.

SpyCat is well on the mend, pulling a turn of 45k/hr across the salt flats - spiking at 50k, I might add. Good thing you were taking it easy last nite mate!!

Zulu scored a flat at the bottom of debrief hill - right in the middle of axe wielding mozzie and sandfly land. The mozzies weren't really axe wielding, we were just spooking ourselves out discussing Van Diemens Land the movie and dengue fever. It was really great conversation!!!

The Silent Assassin blew his front light around River Ranch hills. We should have put a bell on you Ray so we knew where you were - you kept scaring me, sneaking around like that!

And no Zulu, just because the transponder is on my bike, I will NOT be doing the time trial this weekend!

Product Of The Week

A few weeks ago on a Tuesday morning, Rob and Thunder were deeply engrossed in a discussion about bike cleaning products. In short, Rob uses degreaser - Thunder uses diesel.

Curious to test out the performance of degreaser, Thunder gave Progold Degreaser & Wash a whirl. To his surprise, the product worked a treat. Diesel has now been given the flick and Thunder has been converted.

Progold Degreaser is available from the shop for $25 a bottle.

Pothole Of The Week

If you're heading out around the block - keep your eyes open and your wheels away from this bad boy.

Located about half way between the bridge across the salt flats and the Orica turn off, this tyre muncher will swallow you and your bike whole if you get caught out!!

Love Your Bike?

Some would say that we cyclists are a some what passionate breed - some more passionate than others.

Take Tuggy for example. On Facebook, people post pictures of themselves, their holidays, their kids etc. Not Tuggy. Tuggy posts pictures of his beloved Madone! This picture is one of about 5 pictures Tuggy has posted to the world.

I must say Tuggy - they are great pics and your baby looks so shiny and new!! Anytime you're in the cleaning mode, my green Madone is parked in the garage!

Easter Sunday Ride

The Bunny's ride is still on tomorrow - leaving at 5:30am - not so sharp from the Bunnings carpark. I believe our Sunday leader is down south on vacation this weekend - perhaps we can persuade the Croz when he returns for a later start on a Sunday morning???

Next Sunday the MTB rides will recommence. The ride will leave the Coffee Club at Tannum at 6:30am.

As with all good Sunday rides, bring money for brew shop.

The Bunter Magic Ride

A smaller than usual bunch rolled out from the start this morning, and the split at Yarwun was pretty uneven. Only three turning left for the Bunters float - Pyney, Cam and Joan. I'll take the opportunity to let you all know that Pyney intends to continue doing the Block rides ALL THROUGH THE WINTER - go hard Pyney. Next week Pyney will be heading around the Block at the usual time of 4:45am. Anyone who is keen to keep doing the Block is welcome to turn up.

Back to the riding. The 9 of us that turned right at Yarwun were in Easter mode and turned early at the Church. Back at Yarwun, Sweeny Todd gave me the quote of the week, if not the summer - "This pace isn't much faster than the Bunters ride". Um, I don't know if you were intentionally trying to wave a red flag to all the bulls in the pack Stu, or if you were just having a bit of fun, but either way - you got a reaction!! In all seriousness, for your first hitter ride Stu, you rode well. No turning left for you next summer.

At the coffee shop, Dark Horse gave us a display of his awesome power, splitting his full water bottle with his bare hands - covering himself and Ray with water at the same time! Nice one Dark Horse.

Last Saturday Block Ride

Don't forget that tomorrows ride is still on. Leaving Hungries at 4:45am for the last time this summer.

Whispers in the pack are that a few of the Bunters are going to take the opportunity to turn right for the last hit out.... it should be an enjoyable ride.

Thursday & Friday Rolls

Thursday nite saw the bunch take an alternative route to avoid the Harbour Festival which was in full swing and the dirt section near the dump that has grown by an extra couple of hundred metres.

I think everyone would agree that the best part of last nites ride was getting off the bikes and out of the traffic!!!! For a moment I thought we were riding in Brisbane!!

This mornings float was a much calmer and smaller affair with a bunch of only 6 rolling out from Bunny's at 6:03am. We did pick up an extra two before reaching Maccas.

A rather slim looking Bloomers met the bunch at Maccas - pretty impressive timing Bloomers. After our discussion about Bloomers weight loss secret, I'm wondering if anyone will be ordering coffee and muffins tomorrow morning???

Next weeks time trial will be interesting with Slacko Brother Andy testing a new "Glad-Wrap" skin suit. Not quite sure if I want to see that one or not??

On a belated note - congratulations to Ben 10 who finished 4th in last weeks Mooloolaba triathalon in the elite division.
