Saturday Block Rides

Well the King was over-ruled by the people of M1 Land at the brew shop on Saturday morning and then again on Sunday morning when discussion came to reverting back to our favourite Saturday morning Block rides.

The Block rides will recommence THIS saturday (4th September), leaving Hungry Jacks at 4:45am sharp.

The hitters bunch will be turning at the Church on Targinnie road for about the first month to enable Bunters who want to make the jump to the Hitters group the opportunity to do so - before the pace REALLY heats up after Chrissy.

Don't forget your lights and your arm warmers for this weekend - it may still be a little nippy across The Way.

Can't wait!!!!!!!!

C2C4KIDS Charity Ride

Today we had two very awesome blokes ride into our very little shop today.

After fixing their bikes and and a quick chat, we learnt what their ride was about.

David Bonne and Scott Gilbertson are riding from Cooktown to Sydney to raise dollars for Sydney Children’s Hospitals Tumbatin Clinic and the Bonnie Babes Foundation.

To make a donation or just to see what their ride is about, visit their website on http://www.c2c4kids.com.au/

The ride of LEARNING and great views

Sunday 22 Aug marked the start of the106km Flight Centre Epic. The race took off from Preston Peak wines and the “hills” started very soon after. I (Bushy), was very glad I was in the third wave to leave, as Toowoomba had turned on one of it’s finest COLD days and the extra hour of sunshine was appreciated!

The ride to the first of three checkpoints in the Ma Ma creek region was challenging, picturesque and mostly single track. I also had my first lesson of the day – Don’t put Endura in your Camal Bak as it clogs the hose and puts you out of the lead group straight away . . .

After the second checkpoint I climbed the biggest and steepest hill I have ever completed. There are also some long road sections through this area of the race but when I turned into the hills again I had my second lesson of the day – Don’t let your chain come off the top of your rear cassette. This cost me 25 minutes in the race.

After stacking the bike 5km from home I crossed the finish line in 5 hrs 17 seconds (including the mechanical and Camal Bak stop). I placed sixth in the open category which I will improve on next year, courtesy of my lessons this year!

I recommend the Epic to everyone – If you don’t want to race there is some great riding to be had a more leisurely pace . . .

Cheers - Bushy

Calling All Mountain Goats

Racing in Rocky tomorrow is one for the pure mountain goats - or those that think they are!!

It is of course the annual time trial up Mount Archer - definately not an event for the sprinters or those carrying an extra layer of winter warmth.

Zulu and Dark Horse have previously done extremely well in this event. The Zulu has even been known to remove water bottle cages and custom build clusters just for the one event!

I'm fairly certain that we will see the women's record smashed tomorrow by SpyCat who currently has some impressive form. The record is currently held by Gladstone's Cheryl Ogden.

Good luck to everyone heading up. Enjoy your 20 odd minutes of torture!!

The Crusty Ride

Despite the damp and rainy conditions we had yesterday, the sun peeked out just at the last moment to spread a little bit of sunshine on the riders who turned up for the Daffodil Ride.

The bunch may have been a lot smaller than the Pink ride we had two years ago, but for what we lacked in size, we made up in spirit and in laughter - especially when Thunder turned into Crusty The Roadie.

As the ride went on we picked up about another 6 riders along the way and it was good to see that everyone made the effort to wear a little yellow!! Total funds raised on the ride was $80 - not bad given the weather. Drop into the shop today if you forgot your donation last night.

The Fat Beaver Ride

I'm not sure what possessed me to turn up to the Wednesday nite ride on such a cold nite. Perhaps I thought it would be warmer to have the living day lights smashed out of you than bunting around on your own through the marina?

It was definately warmer. It was so warm that I was even getting barked at by the boss before we got to the gardens. Now that's sad - No wonder I don't turn up Wendesday nites!!!

Surprisingly though, the boys have gone a bit soft this year, and only manage one Haddock circuit. Wouldn't have anything to do with Zulu's influence would it?? No one would ever know that you don't like those circuits Zulu!!

Tomorrow Nites Ride - Daffodil Day

Don't forget your yellow bling for tomorrow's nite ride everyone....

The ride will rollout from the back of the shop at 5:30pm usual time. Don't forget to throw a few extra coins in your jersey pockets to contribute to the Cancer Council fundraiser.

Rumour has it that someone's going to the extent of changing their bar tape to yellow just for the ride.....

Darrens New Sign

Now that the economy is turning and
the price of aluminium is picking up again, Dazza has had a high demand for can runs, hence the reason he has decked out his new trailer for the job.
This beast has 3 sets of suspension for the heavy loads, massive tyres for grib and stability and is even pimped out with a massive M1 Cycles Sign.
Just watch out guys, if you sit around the shop to long, you'll be stickered up or signed yourself!

Sunday Morning Riding

Don't forget there are two rides happening tomorrow morning... the roadie ride leaving Bunnings at 5:30am for an easy 40ks or so and then the mountain bike ride leaving choice petroleum at Sunvalley roundabout at 8am.

Bring money for the brew shop as both rides will end up at Maccas.

Have a great Sunday ride everyone :)

The Scone Ride

How to make the perfect M1 Thursday Nite Scones - according to Terese and Flossy.

Ingredients:
- Take 13 or 14 keen M1 riders.
- An assortment of bicycles - Trek, Apollos and Cannodales are preferred - but any bike will be suitable (and welcome!).

Method:
- The temperature should be just right - not too hot and not too cold. Works best without fan force.
- Rotate all ingredients on a regular basis. Ensure that the mixture is kept smooth and is mixed at a steady pace.
- Bake well for about an hour and a half, turning up the heat for the final few minutes.

ENJOY!!

Flying Into Battle

As the sun comes up this sunday, and most of us are just on our leisurely training rides, a local hero will be rising to the challenge in one of the states most challenging mtb races.

The Flight Centre Epic mtb race will be sure to sort every contender out.

Going at it hard in an open division, Andrew will be fighting against some of the States, and maybe even Australias most talented riders, torching himself over the 106km course.

I think the open division pays a little bit more if you win it aye busy ;)

Being told that Bushy is gonna attack em on the hills, just remember that they need a feed too!

Thunder couldnt believe bushy wanted to buy a ergo trainer for a 106km MTB ride! Im sure you will be warmed up enough by the 5km mark bushy! not to much harm will be done for not warming up. We promise!

Also heading down is the silent assassin (aka Ray Rhodes). We couldn't get a pic, or an attack plan from Ray, but goodluck to him.

Once again, good luck to Bushy and Ray this weekend.

The Thunder Stopper

Thunder finally met his match in the States at a hamburger joint at the Chicago airport. The place is called Johnny Rockets.

When we walked in, the place was packed - no tables spare. I thought this was supposed to be a sign that the food was good. How wrong was I! Even Thunder couldn't eat the burger - now that's a first!

A picture says a thousand words. I don't think there's anything more to be said.

The Wipe Out Ride

All started out well last nite on our little roadie ride until we came across the Park Street intersection where we were all nearly wiped out by a motorist who just looked straight through us as he went to turn the corner!!

Moral of the story - don't ever assume drivers have seen you, even when you think they are looking straight at you!

The Dom must have thrown everyone off by going for a sprint at Spinnikar park gates on lap two, as Rob and Terese and Darryl and Dom all went home after we crossed over the bridge. It was a very lonely last lap for me guys - thanx!!!!!

How to Fix a Slashed Tyre

Although what Chris does in this video may look like a complete waste of good tyre, this WILL help when you end up slashing your tyre on those devil rocks.

Pay attention and learn how to get your self home without a spare tube.

http://www.mtbtips.com/

Just a reminder to everyone who would like to hone their mountain biking skills and become the best they can, win monthly prizes or just to get yourself into the mountain biking scene, jump on to Chris's site or turn up to M1's mountainbike rides on tuesday nights, 5.30pm from the back of the shop, 8am at the Phillip st roundabout at choice petroleum on Sundays.

See you all there!

Sale Of The Week

Actually, wasn't there a tv show Sale Of The Century??? Geez, that's a step back in time.

Anyway, Matty has got the deal of the year for anyone looking for a cruisy, commuter, fitness bike - the Trek 7.2FX. At the beginning of the year, this bike was retailing for $799 - now Matty has got them for sale at the crazy price of $499.

These are a hydroformed framed with a 24 speed cassette rear hub for extra speed and strength. The wheels are double wall rimmed with machined braking surfaces - also providing extra strength.

These bikes can provide the same speed as a road bike, but with the comfort of a touring bike. Perfect for any rider.

Sunday Mountain Bike Rides

Ok you furry legged members of the M1 bunch - here's one for you.

Thunder has decided to get the Sunday morning MTB rides off and running again, so drag out your mud machines and meet up at the Choice Petroleum at 8am this Sunday morning for a trip around Ray's Sunshine track in the daylight.

All are welcome. If you're super keen, there would be just enough time to do the Bunny's roadie ride at 5:30am and make it to the MTB ride at 8am....... two rides = two coffee shops. Sounds good to me.

Photo Collection

Drop into the shop with a brew and take a look at the photos from Trek World USA - we've put the collection together to make it easier for everyone to have a look (far too many to post on the blog).

I doubt that Thunder will ever get sick of telling the stories from the US!!

The SRAM Bike

Having finally had time to download most of the pictures from our trip to the USA, I found these of the custom SRAM Madone that was on display at the Booth.

Was it bling bling?? - you bet your bottom it dollar it was. My personal favourite of bling available. There were SRAM froggies on the bar tape, on the head stem, the seat mast, rear stays, chain stays, front forks and all over the frame.

For lovers of SRAM Red, you'll be pleased to know that the new SRAM Red is far superior to previous editions.

If the froggie Madone was available on Project One, you would see a 52cm Madone zipping around the streets of Gladstone... might have to send an email....

To join in the fun and show your support, turn up on the Thursday nite ride in as much yellow as you can muster and bring some coins (or notes) for a donation!!

There may even be a prize for the rider who goes to the most "yellow" effort. Mark it in your calendar as a date claimer.

State Road Race

Good luck to the Proclaimer and SpyCat who are backing up again tomorrow at the State Road titles on the north coast.

After the form the guys showed last weekend at Cunningham, I'm sure there's going to be some good results and stories to tell.

Good luck guys.

In The Land Of The Living

Well, we're back in the land of oz - just. After more than 24 hours of travelling, we're in Sydney airport waiting for our last flight of the day back to Brisbane.

A lot of the flight from LA was spent doing some Trek homework, deciding which bikes to put on the floor etc for the 2011 year - there is an awful lot to choose from this year.

When the 2011 bikes land, there will be a few demo bikes in store for riders to take out and ride for the day. At this stage it looks like there will be a Madone series bike (probably 4 series), Fuel EX8 for the dirt munchers an FX WSD bike and possibly a Speed Concept bike.

There will also be some new bikes on the floor next year, possibly a few of the Gary Fisher Collection bikes and some new womens specific bikes.

That's it for now. I swear I'm still on a plane, the computer screen is moving that bad!!

Don't forget the easy Sunday morning bunch ride will roll out from Bunnings at 5:30am tomorrow morning.

This Is Just The Beginning

Well, its nearly time for us to jump on the plane and start the long trip back home. We still can't wipe the smiles from our faces though.

Yesterday afternoon we took a trip to the Trek Concept store here in Madison. It was pretty cool. After that we went to John Burkes house for drinks and MORE food. JB's house is right on the lake which made a spectacular backdrop as the sun went down. Stunning. If it wasn't enough just to be in the presence of JB, Jim Hoyt was also there. Anyone who knows anything about the Lance Armstrong story will know who Jim Hoyt is.

What more can I say. We have met some truly amazing people - from guys who own 4 shops that turnover $20 million US, the President of Trek to the people who actually make the bikes. The thing that sticks with me the most is the passion. At every level, you can see the passion we all share for Trek.

Is this the end - I think not - it is just the beginning. Over the next few months there are going to be some BIG and exciting changes at M1 Cycles.

We Believe. http://www.trekbikes.com/

Day Three - Pavement and Trek Women

This morning it was a bit hard to get out of bed - I think there was a serious delay in jetlag. Thunder was definately feeling the effects of travel and was wide awake, bright eyed and bushy tailed at 1:35am this morning.

The day kicked off with a session on the 2011 Pavement bikes. These are the FX series or flat bar bikes. Trek have made a really impressive improvement in the FX range of bikes - its called Isozone technology. Basically its an improvement to the handle bars, more importantly the section where your hands spend most of the time. There is a gel section attached to the actual bar and is finished off with a uniquely designed grip. We test rode the 2011 FX 7.6 on Monday morning, and this was the first thing I noticed. Its definately a big improvement for comfort. The Isozone bars are now standard on the FX range from 7.3 upwards.

The Trek Women was one of the most interesting sessions for me so far - for obvious reasons. There are some pretty impressive stats in relation to the 2010 WSD range of bikes. In the US, the Trek Skye is the number one selling womens mountain bike in the market. Trek is also the largest supplier of womens bikes in the US - and this is spreading globally. In 2010, the WSD range was one of the fastest growing sectors of Trek. Because of these facts, Trek have now employed a full time branding and marketing manager for the Trek Women division.

For 2011, Trek Women have introduced a 29er (a 29er is a bike with 29 inch wheels instead of 26 inch wheels) in the MTB area. The 29er gives women more traction and contact with the ground, giving them more confidence. The MTB area is a specific focus for Trek Women in the forth coming years.

One of the things that has struck me the most about the 2011 Trek World has been how much research and development goes into every single Trek and Bontrager product - every year. Its an ongoing process - not just a once off. Every year they are looking at the product, getting reviews from team riders and making subsequent improvements. Its something that has really impressed me. Trek certainly know their stuff.

This afternoon is the close of Trek World for us. It involves looking at more of the product up close and a trip to John Burkes place.

Day Two

Day two was all about learning. We spent a session on the 2011 MTB, 2011 Road /Triathalon and 2011 product. I think that was it - jetlag was kicking in pretty badly around the 2pm mark.

For me, the most impressive piece introduced by Trek for the 2011 year is definately the Speed Concept series 9 and series 7 bikes. Both series bikes are THE proven fastest triathlon bikes in the market - by a huge percentage. Trek have already done the wind tunnel and rolling resistance testing to support these claims. In real terms, if you're doing Ironman events, the Speed Concept bike will take off 3 minutes from your bike leg time - for no extra effort. The attention to detail with this bike is something else - the integrated front brakes, that are built directly into the frame, the "wing" designed seat mast / post area of the bike and the really cool accessories that go with the bike including carbon food carrier that areodinamically fits onto the top tube of the frame. Yep, I was impressed.

The 2011 MTB range includes a new dual chamber shock system. To best describe this - for mere roadies like myself - its a new system that keeps your back wheel closer to the ground when you go over multiple rocks / bumps on the track. With the existing single chamber system, the bike is unable to recover in between multiple bumps which causes the back wheel to come off the ground more, resulting in less control for the rider. There are some pretty cool video's on the Trek website that show this better than I can explain it.

For 2011 the choices available for the road section are amazing - probably too much to go into in a single blog posting. There are now H1, H2 and H3 fit bikes, madone series 6, 5, 4 and 3. A majority of the bikes come in a range of colours (at least two for most bikes). Even the series 2 and series 1 line up of bikes are better this year. To be honest, when I first saw the pictures on the web for the 2011 bikes, I was a bit disappointed with the paint work on the bikes, but in the flesh, they are really awesome bikes. Pictures do not do them justice. Even a majority of the WSD bikes look great - not that I'll be getting a WSD fit!! No pink bikes though.

By mid 2011 a huge range of Bontrager P and A - or soft something - will be available to us in Australia. Trek have really done their homework in this department and there are tonnes of great products that will be coming our way, from tool bags, gloves, helmets, lights, tires (which do come in pink) and shoes. Its going to be a pretty exciting 2011.

Today we are back in school - looking at the WSD range, pavement bikes and something else?? This afternoon we are going to the Madison concept store and then on to a reception at John Burkes place.

A Super Quick Update

Today was spent mostly in school, learning all about Trekology (that's a lingo word for Trek Technology) and of course another look around the 2011 product booth.

Got to go... bus leaving for the Harley Davidson Showroom and dinner.

Encounter Of A Lifetime

Heading to the opening keynote presentation last nite, we were both pretty excited - but not really knowing what to expect. We certainly weren't expecting to bump into the one and only Mr Gary Fisher as we walked into the Ballroom.

There he was - right there in front of us. Of course Thunder took the opportunity for a quick photo snap, and Mr Fisher willingly obliged!!

When its daytime in the Land Down Under, Grainfed will get the photo up on the blog for all to drool over.

Last nite Trek announced a new relationship with Fisher and released the 2011 Fisher Collection. Do they look impressive - you bet. Not as impressive though as the 2011 Booth which has every single Bontrager and Trek product available.

Today we get a better, up close look at these products and will be in Trek school for the remainder of the day.

Ps - The Dom, make sure you get yourself educated on who Mr Fisher is!!!

Day One - In Heaven

Oh my gosh. I seriously don't know where to begin.

Travelling overseas for the first time was definately interesting. A flight to Sydney, a 14 hour flight to LA, a 3 1/2 hour flight to Chicago and a 2 1/2 hour bus ride to Madison. With little to no sleep in 26 hours, I couldn't care less - I'm excited like a kid before Christmas.

Oh, Chrissy A - you were right, Matty was scamed for money as soon as we landed in LA - cost him 10 US dollars!!

Today was day 1 of Trek World - we ventured out to Waterloo at 7:45 am for breakfast at Trek, to be followed by a factory tour and bike testing.

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be standing in the foyer of Trek USA. Words cannot explain when you walk through the glass doors into the first main area. You are greeted with the words "We Believe" on the wall - which is just the start. In the same area, there are all of Lance Armstrongs Tour De France ACTUAL winning bikes!!! Every single one, complete with photos, signed jersey and story.

Also, was Alberto Contador's custom Pink Madone from when he won the Gyro de'Italia (of course I had my photo taken with that bike!!!).

From here we started the tour with our AWESOME guide Jason. From the commuter room and wellness room - which is a full sized gym complete with 4 Cyclops trainers, running machine, weights machines, free weights etc - we moved onto the design room. This is the newest part of Trek (the one that was recently featured on Cycling News about 12 months ago). The place is just incredible - Trek look after their employees like family.

In the race room, the awesome experience just continued. Here is where they put together each bike that Trek teams race on. All are custom made to each riders requirements. At the time, Lance's moutain bike was on the stand, getting ready for a new paint job. He has a MTB race on next weekend. If the boys in the race room aren't busy, they get to make their own bikes. And I kidd you not, ready to go were two 20 inch bikes - one a pink mtb, the other a orange time trial bike, complete with electronic shifting. Those kids will be the LUCKIEST in the world!!!

Moving onto the assembly process is where you truly get a feeling for the meaning "hand made". The Madones are literally - hand made. Every part of the process involves manual labour, from the layering process (which we actually saw), to the bike decalling (which is done primarily by women only).

After the tour was the bike testing. In the carpark, was every size of every Trek you would ever dream of riding. From the 6.9 Madones, Speed Concept bikes to the pure downhill animals. The world was our oyster for a few hours.

Tonite we are heading to the opening dinner which includes a keynote talk from John Burke - owner of Trek. There are shops from all over the world - China, Japan, Ireland, Norway, Salvador, Mexico and every state in America.

More than 1200 leading Trek shops world wide are represented here - including our very own little humble M1 Cycles, all the way from Gladstone Queensland. Some Americans here don't even know where Queensland are, so we are feeling very small in comparison!!!

We are having a ball and can't wipe the smiles from our faces - as you would imagine. Another update tomorrow guys.

Here We Go....

Here we go - two little country bumpkins - heading off on our big adventure to Trek Headquarters in the US.

At the moment, we're killing time in the Qantas lounge in Brisbane. The trip was off to a delayed start - by 2 hours in the Gladstone airport... and the coffee shop wasn't open!!! It was a very long 2 hours.

Anyway, let's get on with some results from Cunningham.

SpyCat has claimed her first open win in womens racing. Upgraded to B grade women in the last few days before the race, SpyCat came in with the bunch kick and took out the win. To match her victory, SpyCat picked up 2nd place in the QOM earlier in the race.

The Proclaimer stayed upright this time and came home in the leading bunch - not able to claim a place, but extremely happy to be in the lead bunch.

Bushy scored a 2nd place in the KOM in elite B grade and came home in 7th place in the final kick.

In masters C, Tuggy also rode strongly and came home with a 5th place for his efforts??

In a very elite, and tough field of U19 whippets, Grainfed found the pace too hot to handle just before the climb and got busted. Trust me Grainfed, you're not the only one who has ridden home alone - and you won't be the last!

Well done to everyone who raced. If I've botched the results (I'm getting them third hand from Thunder) than don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!!

Ride safe this week everyone. Zulu - you're in charge next Saturday morning. Make sure you keep everyone in the gutter.

Product Of The Week

If you're a budding time trialist or die-hard triathelete then, this weeks product of the week is specifically for you.

Trek have just launched the 2011 Project One Time Trial bike - or if you want to be really techo, 2011 Project One Speed Concept bike.

If you want to be impressed, you know where to go to start your design http://www.trekbikes.com/

Thursday Nite Ride - 5th August

Alas, despite big hopes before the ride, we didn't break the record - only 17 riders - which did include a few stragglers we picked up along the way.

The super still conditions made the ride a very quick and a very easy one. There was a lot of excitement and talk in the pack regarding the trip to Trek US this weekend. Are we excited - YOU BET WE ARE!!!!

And yes Tuggy, the hardmen and women of the pack do Double Hollywood circuits at J Hickey - only the soft do one lap!

Good luck to everyone racing at Cunningham tomorrow, for everyone else - see you at Fordy's at 6:00am.

Record Breaking Attempt

Alright everyone, I'm in the mood for a challenge.

On tonites Thursday nite ride, lets see if we can set a new record for the most number of riders turning up. According to my books - and I'm pretty good with numbers - I've counted a record of 23 riders for a Thursday nite.

Let's see if we can't set a new one tonite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Cunningham Classic

This weekend a number of the M1 Big Guns are heading south to Gatton to ride the Cunningham Classic on Saturday morning.

Proudly representing M1 Cycles and Gladstone are:

Masters A - The Proclaimer. The Proclaimer has had a stella year to date and is definately going into this years race with good form. You just gotta stay upright in the last 5 hundy Proclaimer!!

Masters C - Tuggy. First year entrant. Coming off a week of illness and no training.... good form beforehand though should pull the Tugmaster through.

B Grade Elite - Bushy. Bit of an unknown here. Bushy has the legs, but will need the smarts in a very competitive B grade field.

C Grade Women - SpyCat. Watch out for this UnderCat. Also a first year Cunningham rider, but as strong as they come. Has had the advantage of seeing the course last year.

U19 Men - Grainfed. In his first year of road racing, Grainfed has landed himself in a hot division of U19 Whippets. Most of them need a feed and may have an advantage on the climbs, but our Grainfed will go well.

Good luck to everyone racing. Ride hard. To all of us left behind on Saturday morning, see you at Fordys at 6am for a leisurely roll to the brew shop!!!

Let The Count Down Begin...

Not until this weekend!!! But until the Spring time block rides start.... Its only 4 weeks until the Saturday morning rides will revert back to the Saturday block rides. The changeover is scheduled to happen on the 4th September.

Well done to Pyney who has managed to survive the winter - I guess if you can call it that - and continued doing the block rides for a majority of the Saturday mornings.

Don't worry Zulu, this also means that there will only be about a month or so until the Wednesday nite rides switch back to the Wednesday block ride as well.

Tonite the bunch is still heading out to Haddock drive. Will the bunch be able to complete more than 1 lap????
