Bring Back The Croz

On the Footy Show they started a campaign to "Bring back the Biff".... well, on the M1 Blog, I'm starting a campaign to "Bring back the Croz".

Croz was the original instigator of the Sunday morning Bunny's ride. He's been absent for some time now, so I think its time we "Bring back the Croz" to the Sunday rides. After all, you'll need to start getting some k's under your belt for the annual ride out to Many Peaks.

I know you still read the blog Croz..... so BRING BACK THE CROZ tomorrow!!

The Brown Cow Ride

It was a welcome back to Brother Ferg this morning who decided to finally dust off the Cannondale and come for a spin.

So it was like a heard of lost cows, that we headed out for this mornings ride from Craigs - out through Beecher, through Calliope and out to Kroombit Tops road. We decided to give River Ranch the flick after last weeks encounter with the Ant Nest construction.

It wasn't until the turnaround that the Brown Cows finally got some order together. Once the order was achieved, the LG-Grainfed train started spitting out riders on the way back from Kroombit Top road, one by one. Like beavers clinging to a bit of wood, SpyCat and I made it to the main road with what was left of the bunch... you boys really need to learn to ride with a bit more smarts and not so much testosterone!

At the coffee shop Floyd came out with the following clanger.... "remember when we used to average +33k an hour for the Saturday block rides.... today wasn't that hard". Let us all remember this statement from Floyd - I'm sure you'll eat those words by the end of the off season!!

All up today's ride was just under 80k's, if you don't do any ekky. An awesome ride.

Oh, and the MUDCAKE was down right YUMMO!!

The Birthday Ride

Make sure you're on tomorrow's ride that leaves from Craigs at 4:45am.... its Thunders birthday!!!!

And just to celebrate, they'll be a MUDCAKE waiting when we get to the bakery!!! But, shhhhhh don't tell Matt, it's a secret!!!

MTB Ride Saturday Afternoon

There is an MTB ride leaving from the clinton school/ touch footy carpark this saturday at 3.30pm.

The ride will most likely go for a couple of hours.

The World Champs Bike

Ever just seen a bike and never known what to say. Not a bike that has just been whacked straight out of a box with a "generic" label on the side of the down tube, and all you can say is, "that's a nice bike". A bike with character, one that has been specifically made for someone, with the utmost care and attention.

By now, everyone should know Craig Taylor. As Matty says everytime his name is mentioned - THE most respected man ever to clip his foot into a pedal.

Craig has just recieved a 2012 Trek Madone 6.2 with Dura-Ace Di2. Trek organised it to be painted by the same man that paints Ferrari's and Porsche's. The paintjob alone would be worth more then the bike.

Craig was given this bike by Troy from Yellow Jersey at a 24/7 cycling safety fund event. Craigs sister, (Troys mother) recently passed away after being hit my a motorist.

The Two Days That Have Been

Tuesday morning ride. There were a couple of guns missing from the Tuesday morning ride which made the paceline a little more bareable - until LG got to the front and pulled a turn from hell from Sticky's into the Port roundabout. Good to see our new riders managed to make it to the end of the paceline.

And, I never realised how many Ants there are that travel across to the Island at that hour of the morning. I couldn't stop humming... The Ants go marching two by two, hoorah hoorah.

Wednesday morning ride. Another attempt at the Sunshine Track. I say "attempt" because the Wahoo Boys got the better of me. I came a buster and have the bruises to prove it. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Mind you though, I didn't feel too bad when the Newell tribe rolled up and poor Hayden fell over not once, but twice before he even started the Wahoo Boys! I was soooooo feeling your pain Hayden!

Don't forget tomorrow's roadie ride leaves from Craigs at 5am. The weather is getting warmer (slowly), so hopefully the Freezer won't be as cold.

In other M1 news, Bushy is heading in for knee surgery on Friday. He'll be out of bike action for around 3 months...... We wish you all the best Bushy, hope it goes well.

The Team

Rockhampton Cycle Club Road Championships

M1 riders were in full flight on saturday with the Rockhampton Cycle Club holding the 2011 Club Championships at The Caves.

LG, Darkhorse and Grainfed started in A grade with Wormy and LewBear. The course seemed to suit everyone except Lew and Brad. Lew was the first to go on the last lap out when LG attacked on the hills. Despite their efforts, they were unable to unload Grainfed who flicked Darkhorse and LG in the last 50 metres. Sean pulled 2nd and Micky 3rd.

Silent Assassin, Spycat, and Dylan flew the flag for M1 in B grade. Ray was showing his true form in the race, attacking everyone and sitting on the front the whole race with Dylan. Dylan rode the race well and took off on the last uphill coming onto the home straight, knowing that lachie ferguson from rocky would nail him in the sprint if he didnt. Dylan held a 200 metre lead between him and the bunch, while cat nipped ray in the sprint.

Dylan Nankivell showed everyone that it is not about what bike or wheels you ride, nor what gearing you are running. It all comes down to what you have in the legs, and winning the B grade race showed everyone exactly that.

Mark Ruthenberg pulled 4th place in C grade, and quickly learning not to lead a sprinter out.

It was hilly, windy and fast, made a great day of racing for everyone. You all did M1 cycles proud!

Photos can be found on Bronwyn Ferguson's Facebook Page.

Dirty Rats MTB Ride

The end of the 2011 road season marked the start of the official summer time rides for the "Dirty Rats". It was a great day a thrills and mostly spills, pumping out 2 laps, or 6 sections of rays track.

All the hitters were there including super enduro 24hr rider Matty Ness on his Gary Fisher HI-FI, and Peter Barnwell on his thingy majigy, which might I add, snapped his chain, showing his true amount of leg power and freshly tanned legs from the recent Schmidy Cancer Fundraiser Ride.

Even Gary came up for some "track maintenance" with old Ray and I after everyone left.

If anyone out there in Roadie Land wants to get a little bit more dirty, remember matty has some great specials on a few 2011 Trek and Merida bikes. It is well worth the investment!

The Owie Ride

Everyone was scooting from the coffee shop early this morning in order to make a quick transitition to head up to the Sunshine Track for a lap or two at 8:30.

Zooloo was off to a quick start almost leaving poor Bam Bam behind at the coffee shop - who hadn't even finished her brew!! Oh, and did you notice the correct spelling of Zooloo's name??? Its not actually Zulu - bicycle warrior. Its Zoo-loo - animal toilet???? Classy.

Anyway, back to the Dirty Rats. I think good fun was had by all, except for maybe SpyCat who came a cropper somewhere around the track.... maybe on the WAHOOOOOOOO Boys??

With skin off, you're now officially a Dirt Rat Cat. Hey, I think you may have just scored yourself a new Blog name in the process!

The Half Dozen Ride

We roll into Bunny's this morning and here's Whiffo - in heaven - surronded by Roadie chicks. 4 to 1. There was that many new chicks on the ride Whiffo had to ask for a new rider introduction.... you should just turn up on more bunch rides Whiff, then you'd know everyone!!

There was no Try-Smurf this morning, he was at home winning birthday brownie points. There was no Dave the Dentist either, he was at Tooth World 2012. That doesn't have a real good ring to it Dave... no where near as cool as Trek World 2012!!!

Well done to Helen and Megan who managed to stay with the pack for the entire ride. Neither of them got lost or dropped of the back of the pack. It was a record today with 6 chicks in the pack.. it was being debated if Helen's bub should have been classed as 6.5. Give it a few years and I think we'll make that a full 7.

Another perfect day for riding... just got to warm it up a bit and get rid of the smoke.

And please, don't mention DAY LIGHT SAVINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Not So Scientific Experiment

I was wondering what difference tyres make to your performance, so I decided to compare them on rollers with the powertap and Garmin 500.

I did 15km and tried to keep the same cadence and keep my heart rate and power in Recovery Zone: 100-115bpm and 130-160 watts of power.

I used the Bontrager R2 tyres, these are tyres designed for riding on the road, they are not especially fast and they retail for under $50. I got 3000km (about 100 hours) out of the rear and was very happy with it. They are comparable to any conti tyre I have used and they come from the local bike shop, they also don't have that sidewall issues that I found with conti tyres. One day I will try the faster R3 tyres and see what they come up with!

Then I used the Bontrager All weather tyre, these road tyres are NOT designed for speed and are similiar to continental Gator skins in design and feel. They are a fantastic tyre for commuting to and from work and for training. I believe one local rider has already 3500km on these guys, I have 500km on this set now and whilst they are certainly not a performance tyre, they are great for chucking on your bike to avoid punctures and to just roll to and from work etc. I would recommend them to anyone who does a lot of travelling to and from work and who wants to avoid as many flatties as possible. They really are well designed for that type of rider. (of course, if you want to make your ride harder to build strength and endurance, put a set of these bad boys on)

What difference do tyres make:

Bontrager R2 Tyres on rollers: Average Speed for 15km: 31.47kp/h
Average Heart Rate for 15km: 101 bpm
Average Power for 15km: 132

Bontrager All Weather Tyres on rollers: Average Speed for 15km: 27.6kp/h
Average Heart Rate for 15km: 111 bpm
Average Power for 15km: 160

The answer is heaps! As you can see, I had to work harder, I had to push 28 more watts and I was still about 4kp/h slower on the All weather tyres. Heart rate can vary depending on all types of factors, power is real and specific. This not very scientific, but all I was doing was comparing a proper road performance tyre with a genuine all weather training/commuting tyre.

Bontrager R2 - RRP $35
Bontrager R3 - RRP $50
Bontrager RXL All Weather - RRP $65

The New Recruit

BSB has been recruiting riders for the M1 bunch from all of the US this week. It looks like the M1 bunch will have some high profile boys in the pack soon.

His latest recruit - Vin Diesel - was more than happy to pose for this happy snap complete with M1 cap when BSB caught up with him in LA.

I hope you told him all about the Sunshine Track BSB!!!

The Thursday Morning Ride

Well, it looks like the Thursday morning bunch ride might turn out to be a bit of a winner. There was 11 of us that turned up at Craig's for this mornings ride. It was good to see not only the regulars but also a couple of new faces as well.

For those that don't know the circuit, the bunch heads out past the Gardens and then along Kirkwood Road. From here, we drop down into the Freezer before turning off the main road into Beecher Estate. A couple of us took the easy option and turned left onto Schultz Rd whilst the remainder of the boys went out to Kitten's Mittens aka Devil's Elbow. There is a little bit of pacelining through Becher Estate and then the bunch turns around and heads back up over Haddock. All up its about 40ks.

We weren't the only ones up and riding at 5am... it appears that a few others were also sneaking in ekky laps around the Sunshine Track before this weekends Sunday Ride. I think the MTB Bug has been biting!! Ray's Brother was also busted doing a few ekky road k's in the wee hours of the morning.

Don't forget Saturday's ride is leaving Craigs at 4:45am.

The Warning Sign

On his international travels BSB has come across this sign in Whistler.

Appropriate for the Sunshine Track????? Nah, it's not that scarey.... not now that I can do the Wahoo Boys!!!!!!!!!

Day 3 - The Wahoo Boys

So this morning was day 3 on the MTB. Feeling a bit more comfortable in the dark I decide to tackle the climb into the Sunshine track. I make it a third of the way up. I'm happy with that start, its further than Monday's effort.

At the top, Thunder heads back down to check for other riders and I head off to section 1. It's still dark, but at least section one is dry today!!!! I walk down wahoo boy number one... not quite that confident yet. I do however make it over all the bridges and do a couple of the log jumps. The key is to RELAX!!!!!!

Thunder catches me at the end of section one and we roll through section two and three quite ok. Back at the top of the track its now daylight and we have a bit of spare time. Thunder convinces me to have a go at the Wahoo Boys. Imagine riding a rollercoaster on two wheels.... its EXACTLY like that - but I made it through not one, but all three Wahoo Boys!!!! I leave the track feeling pretty darn happy with my efforts.

Perhaps the three months may not be as long as I first thought - but that could be a dangerous thought!!!

The Tuesday Ride

It was STILL freezing for the Tuesday morning bunch ride yesterday. The numbers were looking pretty slim until we picked up SpyCat, LG and Grainfed.

Before the paceline started, I wore a spray from Floyd - literally. The paceline remained fairly consistent and smooth until each time Grainfed got to the front.... suddenly we went from 40 to 45. Snap. End of the paceline for me - welcome back.

SpyCat and I put our skirts on and headed out to Haddock before the boys. Mini Mick, Grainfed and LG all caught us before the top of the climb - welcome back.

Don't forget Thursday's ride leaves from Craig's Bakery at 5am.... This time Sweeny and Dave we will be doing Kitten's Mittens, no excuses.

Newsflash Newsflash Newsflash Newsflash

In breaking news, the Newell family consisting of LG, SpyCat and Hayden have just been busted terrorising the footpaths adjoining the Sunshine Track on their mountain bikes....

I hate to point it out guys but, you're supposed to ride on the dirt when you ride a mountain bike!!! And what's this, I think I may have even noticed that SpyCat had clip ons???? Looks like the Dirty Rats may have another rider this Sunday morning...

the new bontrager d3 wheels

I know that we keep raving on about how good bontrager wheels are, the classics, the aeolus wheels...

As matty once said to an old mate, if your running anything but these, your wasting seconds.

Day Two - The Crocodile Ride

It's still dark at 5am. And it was still freezing this morning.

Up the gutter and we head towards the Sunshine Track. Obstacle one - it's dark and despite the AYUP's I find it hard to see the track in front of me, even though you can basically drive a car down the track.

Obstacle two - the entrance into the Sunshine Track. I choose to walk this one. Its all up hill and loose gravel. I like my knees.

Ok. So we're at the top of the Sunshine Track. For those who haven't been there, the track is broken into 3 sections. We head to section one, its STILL dark.

Section one - Its supposed to start with the "wahoo boys". Yep - walked that one too. Basically section one was too wet to ride. Flooded would probably describe section one best - flooded from the tears pouring out of my eyes as I spend more time pushing the EX as opposed to actually riding it!

Ah, but as the sun comes up so does my confidence. In the space of this morning I figured out that you have to actually "ride" a mountain bike. Unlike a Madone, you have to use your body, core, brains and skills to get the MTB to stay on the tracks. The ride become much more enjoyable after I got that sorted.

I think its going to be a long 3 months.

The Saturday Morning Rides

Dust of your hurt legs boys and girls, this Saturday sees the revival of the Saturday Morning Smashfest.

As you would all know, we've had to abandon the traditional block circuit. The rides will now roll out from Craig's Bakery carpark at 4:45am - sharp (Thunder needs to ensure that he has enough time to do the ride and do lattes at the brew shop afterwards before getting to work).

Where the ride will take us we're not quite certain, but we do know this much. The bunch will head out along Sun Valley Road to Phillip St (you still with us Dave???). From here, we'll head out towards Calliope. The bunch will split at the turn off to Devils Elbow. Hitters will tackle a few hills before heading out towards Many Peaks road and returning via the same hills - maybe?? We'll just have to see how it goes, but I'm sure it will develop into a smashfest after a few weeks.

Perhaps we may even see the return of the long lost Thomas........

Day 1 - The Journal Begins

MTB Fever seems to be hitting everyone in the M1 bunch this spring and I think Thunder has been hit the hardest - especially since returning from his play trip to Trek World 2012 in Canberra.

It's hit him that hard that he makes the following claim - in 3 months he's going to have me riding a mountain bike to a standard where I can hold my own with the boys. You can imagine my response, given that my last MTB effort resulted in a blog posting complete with picture of me laying in the dirt.

None the less, I'm up for a challenge. Afterall, I do love bikes.

So today is day one. This morning after the road ride we head to the shop to pick up my new steed - a Trek Fuel EX6. The boys set the shockies based on calculations provided by Dexter (Trek's online computer system) that are taylored individually to each rider based on their weight.

We head to Tannum. I'm a little skeptical on my ability to stay upright. I have plenty of bad memories of MTB riding at Tannum years ago. With a quick adjustment of the seat height we're off along the Wild Cattle creek track. It's actually pretty cruisey - even for me.

Done with this, we head off to some tracks near the squash court. This is where I really start to get nervous. Challenge number one - jump the gutter. Done. The dual suspension helps on this. Into the bush we go. The first thing I notice is that the dually actually WANTS to help you in the tricky parts - I found it heaps easier than the hard tail I was riding before.

We spend about an hour and a half rolling through the bush, hopping over logs, doing small drop offs (on the other side of logs!) and getting completely lost and going around in circles! We head back to the car and I feel relieved and actually pretty excited - it was pretty fun!!! And I managed to stay upright and only sustained a few minor srcapes and scratches!

Tomorrow morning is the Sunshine Track at 5am. Wish me luck!

TREK WORLD HERE I COME

For me, there is only one more sleep until I am off to TREK WORLD 2012 in sunny Canberra!

I am going to be like a kid the night before Christmas. It is going to be great to catch up with my old mate Wade Morgan, one of the main driving forces behind TREK and what it stands for.

Now that I have an Iphone, I am even flasher then a rat with a gold tooth. I e-mailed Wade a photo of the "M1 Cycles TREK Carbon Club" riders bikes from the coffee shop on sunday. Wade, not really up to speed with whats going on in Australia, his first reply was, "Man, there must be some coin in Gladstone, with the carbon tax and all... How can they all afford to ride all them carbon bikes?"

Man, Wade is so over the top at times. I explained to Wade that the average bunter could get him or herself an OCLV carbon Madone with LEoPARD TREK team colours for $3799, full Ultegra, DONE.

I said to Wade that in the past 8 years I have been selling TREK, I have never, ever, heard anyone that owns a carbon TREK say that they would ever own another bicycle. Imagine if I got a dollar for every time someone said they wanted to get rid of their "high end" roadie and replace it with a TREK... I would be rich!

This mornings bunch ride had all the main players in it. The only thing different was that Stew, Dave, and Chrissy busted me. I looked behind for Spycat, of course she did a casper.

LG is getting stronger then ever.

Dont forget the new bunch ride starts at Craigs Bakery at 5.00 am sharp. I think its about 45k with Haddock drive at the end.

The Upknick Ride

The Sunday morning Bunny's ride saw a good turn out - probably the best over recent months. There were quite a few new riders in the bunch - Murray from NZ, Kirsty and her partner, Chris and Megan (on her second bunch ride). There was also one very cheeky dentist - who will remain anonymous - who mas making comment about his new Ultegra running gear. I'm just pretending that the comment was directed at me Dave!!!

The start of the ride also saw the birth of Mini Mick. When the Dom was asked if he raced on Saturday he quickly spat out "Im doing a hundy k today". Surely no one needs to ask why the Dom is now known as Mini Mick??? On that note, congrats has to go to LG for his race on Saturday at Seeona Park. Rumors have it that LG actually lapped the field in horridly windy conditions.

It was a little windy for some parts of the ride on Sunday. So much so that it blew Try-Smurf right off his bike as we pulled up at Barney Point. What's that??? It wasn't the wind the blew Try-Smurf off his Madone, it was just Try-Smurf being a gumby and forgetting to pull his foot out. Oh right, glad I got the story straightened out!!

And whose you're daddy LG?????

The Criterium Results

Despite our cheers and predictions at the coffee shop this morning, it was a tough day at the office for young Grainfed at the State Criterium today. As predicted, the under 23 mens field was hot from the start tearing the legs off more than one rider in the bunch.

Put it down to experience Grainfed - use it as motiviation. Trust me, we've all been there, where you are now... just dust yourself off, saddle up and have another go. To throw yourself into an under 23 crit is a feat in itself - you did the M1 mob proud. After all, the rest of us were sitting at the coffee shop drinking lattes and eating scones!!

By the looks of the picture, it was a tough day for Gary as well - all that spectating and chasing cyclists..... just too much for a miniature horse, I mean dog to bear. Gary needed a nap on the trip home!

The Happy Fathers Day

To all the Dad's out there in M1 Land - we hope you had a great day!!!

I know one Dad who was pretty happy today.... he joined the Trek family.

Now Dad, I expect that you'll be racking up those k's this week. I will be checking Garmin Connect each day for your progress... and I will know if you've taken the short cuts!!!

Riding This Weekend

Tomorrow the bunch ride still leaves from Fordy's fish n chip shop in Tank Street. The bunch rolls out at 5:30am. In about two weeks time the Saturday rides will swing to the summer time circuit - which will be somewhat different to this year.... The actual circuit is still being debated.

Sunday the Bunny's ride is on again. Leaving at a leisurely 5:30am. Last week the Roses out numbered the Thorns. 3 to 1 at the beginning. Thunder only gained some company when Darryl turned up as we headed through Spinniker park. Plenty of new chicks riding in the bunch now - I'm sure we'd actually outnumber the boys now....

At 8:30 the dirt rats are hitting the Sunshine Track - meeting at Choice Petroleum first. Make sure you turn up Darryl to show off your new piece of bling... a Carbon Trek EX9.

If you're not sure of the ride times, check out the updated times on the left hand side.

Oh, and watch out for the maggies. It is only the second day of spring, but already they've been out for a while....

Queensland U23 Criterium Championship

An old Mate once said to me “When the flag drops the bullshit stops”. That was just before the Charters towers to Townsville in 1993. Oh yeah... did I tell you that I still hold the record for that race- 126 km in 2 hours 49 minutes. But this is not about me.

This Sunday, Brad (GRAINFED) is off to Gympie for the under 23 state criterium. With only 15 in the field there won’t be much traffic. But all the riders have turbos in their V8's and are all riding for sheep stations. Most of these boys are putting their lives on hold and training their hearts out.

I would like a gold coin for every time that someone has asked me how I think Brado will go. In saying this I don’t want to loose my 100% picking a winner record (the Calliope road race. With Mickey (LG) winning).

Yes Brad has a big motor, but so does every other 19 year old. He is up against mostly older riders that race crit’s week in, week out, so I’m putting my money on a top 3 finish. I’ve seen him ride a few crit’s and he has impressed me every time. I’ve even lent him a great set of Bontrager wheels.

So I’ve only given him three things to do with a two laps to go “POSITION POSITION POSITION”. I’ve seen so many so called sprinters getting dusted because they couldn’t get the simplest thing right. Good luck Brad, Allez!!

Maryborough Criterium

The Maryborough criterium is still on. rumours surfaced about the event being cancelled, but a few phone calls quickly cleared the problem. The race is on next saturday.

http://www.technologychallenge.com.au/htccc.html
