I'm not one to boast, or tell you how well the riding is going, but when i pull up my STRAVA dashboard every week and see that I am smashing the most famous sprints and KOM's in M1 land, I just thought it was time to show all my fellow fat cyclists out there that we can be KOM's and we can be sprint kings.

Parkhurst Criterium Round 4

Rockhampton Cycle Clubs Parkhurst crit was held again yesterday, with one of the most spectacular finishes seen from the club in a long time. M1 Cycles very own Dylan Nankivell rode solo with Cam Jennings for the last 15 min of the 50 min race. The pair put a half lap lead onto the chasing pack and held it until the very end. With cam lifting up at 2 laps to go, Dylan drove the last 2 laps at 54kph to take out the A grade win solo, with the pack only metres behind him.

Brad was unfortunate this time in this race and was unable to hold turns with the guns, he should be back with a vengeance in the near future...

C grade had new comers Scott Smith and Tim Hancock, who rode extremely well for their first ever race, and first ever crit. Way to throw yourselves in the deepend boys. Tim finished mid pack in the sprint, and Scotty not to far behind. Jodine Cragg and KP had the ride of the day, giving the boys hell in the crit, and again, finishing mid field.

Well done to all M1 riders, it was a great turn out, with even better results.

Dylan Nankivell and Brad Lawlor head south this weekend to compete in the Toowoomba two day event. It involves a criterium on saturday and a 70km kermese on sunday. Maybe Brads loss on the weekend was just a taper for this weeks big open event. Only time will tell...

Bass Strait ayaking Trip Report 2009

It all began at about 3am during a 35hour stage on day 3 of an adventure race in Victoria in April last year when I mentioned to my teammate, Nick, that for a number of years I had wanted to kayak across Bass Strait. What better time is there when you are physically and mentally exhausted and are feeling jealous of your mates at home tucked up in their warm beds after a few beers to be considering ideas for future adventures? Having no sea kayak
experience or really any idea of what may be involved I recall Nick muttering in a state of delirium -yeah buddy” probably just to shut me up at the time. A month or so later after the pains from that race were forgotten those words were recalled and we started to put plans in place for the most amazing and challenging kayaking trip either of us had ever experienced0..

buring our initial investigations into the trip we were put in contact with bave and Marj who also had aspirations of kayaking across Bass Strait. So, as a team of 4 we obtained nautical charts, weather patterns, equipment lists, Google Earth photos, trained and prepared for the journey ahead. The plan was to kayak from Tidal River in Victoria via the islands on the eastern side and land at Little Musselroe Bay in Tasmania. Total distance would be approximately 320km and approximately 10 days depending on weather conditions. End of december 2008 was chosen as the target date, mainly due to being the holiday period and fitting in with each others work commitments and movements. Around Christmas/New Year Bass Strait is renowned for unpredictable weather, storms and big seas. We were hoping for a good weather window and prepared to spend extra days camped on islands if need be waiting for weather to pass.

On 28th december we departed Tidal River (many thanks to my bad and brother-in-law for driving with me from Sydney to Melbourne to drop us off at our departure point and drive the car back to Sydney) and paddled the 28km around to Waterloo Bay on Wilsons Promontory, the closest departure point prior to the first ocean crossing to Hogans Island. This day of paddling was in fact the hairiest time both Nick and myself had had so far in a sea kayak. About an hour into the paddle, and coming around the southern tip of Wilsons Promontory the winds really picked up, and, combined with the confused combination of swell, current and waves breaking off the rocks for 2 hours Nick and I were absolutely crapping ourselves and certainly didn't dare take our hands off the paddle. Arriving at Waterloo bay,
where for the next 6 days we would have to camp waiting patiently for the weather to subside. There would certainly be worse places to be than camped at the ‘PromB and we filled in our days with a number of great walks in the area. A walk to the lighthouse on one of those days we saw that wind gusts were recorded up to 96km/hr whilst we were out there paddling, certainly pretty exciting stuff and makes you feel alive. On day 6, the day before a good weather window was
to arrive, we were in the bay practicing a few capsize drills. As bad luck would have it during one drill the cockpit rim in front broke off. As the saying goes -if it cant be duct, its fEFked” thus ending any chance we had of even really beginning the journey to Tasmania. Breaking the rim means its impossible to wear a sprayskirt to prevent water entering the boat. After duct taping Nick into the cockpit to minimize water entry we paddled back around to Tidal River and headed back home. Wed had a great week of camping but disappointment at not being able to achieve our goal. We were down, but not beaten.

Back home in Brisbane Nick and I still had a burning desire to complete the mission but bave and Marj would not be able to join us. This meant we had to make a decision to attempt the trip again just the 2 of us in a double or abandon the trip and have that feeling of being beaten.
Both being determined, stubborn and hated the feeling of being beaten we decided to give it a second crack, just the 2 of us. One thing that we were both confident of was the ability within ourselves and each other to be able to lift in the face of adversity should the need to arise. Theres certainly never be any quitting on either behalf no matter how bad things became. We had also learn a lot from our small amount of paddling around Wilsons Promontory and were able to better prepare for the trip ahead in the second attempt. So, on Wednesday 18th March we took a 5am flight from Brisbane to Melbourne to begin our second journey. Below is day by day summary;

Flew to Melbourne and spent the day cutting out the old cockpit rim and inserting a new rim. Thanks to my brothers friend Anna who let us keep the kayak at her house in Melbourne and perform the work on the boat.

bay 1 - Thu, 19th March 2009
My brother Geoff took the day of work to drive us from Melbourne to Wilson Promontory (thanks Geoff). The park is closed due to the bushfires but we were told on the phone that there would be a good chance wed be allowed through the
gate depending upon who was on duty. Arrived at the gate
0900 and not allowed through. Our backup option was to depart from Port Welshpool. We were also told we would not be allowed to camp on any of the beaches within Wilsons Promontory either. Stupid bureaucratic crap meant we would now have to depart from Port Welshpool, paddle against the tide, paddle further, and have a longer and hence more dangerous crossing to Hogans Island the next day. According to the National Parks people they said the
only place we could camp would be Snake Island and paddling an extra 10km of open ocean the next day to Hogans Island.
We drove round to Port Welshpool, loaded the kayak and departed @1215. Total weight of the fully loaded boat with 10 days food and ourselves totals approximately 270kg, a fair lump of a thing to have to paddle the next 330km. We paddled past Snake Island @1400 and, assessing conditions, distance we had to paddle the next day and the chances of being spotted by National Parks ranger and decided to continue down (paddling against a strong tide) around Wilsons Promontory and spend the night elsewhere. I wont mention where we spent the night in writing but it was pretty close to Rabbit Island. Rabbit Island was a great little Island and had a rookery of resident penguins, noisy little buggers throughout the night0.

bay 2 - Fri, 20th March 2009
After spending 6days over Christmas/new years period looking towards Hogans Island somewhere in the distance this was the leg of the trip that was our biggest mental barrier. It was also the biggest open water ocean
crossing without and land that Nick or myself had done. We didn't know how wed feel not being in sight of land, what the seas would bring to us or even if wed get seasick. It was all new and all very exciting. Today was the day the trip begins proper0.
Up @0345, had breaky packed up and departed at 0500. We planned on leaving early and paddling the first couple of hours in the dark because mentally it feels better to have the day come to us, to minimize the risk of not reaching an island before dark and to make the most of good weather conditions. The forecast
today was perfect, 10 - 15knots wind and only a 1.5m swell. It was to be the best
paddling conditions of the trip. There is a small bit of video footage of us paddling in the dark and in these great conditions, but, unfortunately Nick is a banker
during the week and must have forgotten to turn the power on when charging his camera battery before the trip. Yes, hed bought a brand new waterproof camera especially for the trip but had brought along a flat battery0. So, any photos and videos taken of the trip after today had to be on land or when close to the shelter of land. Today we also practiced our ‘peeing in the boat skills. When the weather was calm enough we could occasionally quickly take the
sprayskirt off to pee over the boat. The peeing into a bailing bucket technique was quickly superceded when we both realised we were well enough endowed to be able to just hang ‘iti over the side (well, close anyway) and pee straight out. As the trip progressed we were able to master squirting the last bit over so minimal went inside the cockpit. As for when the weather wasnit so good to pee out of the boat (most of the time during the 7 days of paddling), well, it doesnit take much imagine to know where it went and who got to sit in it0.
Arrived at Hogans Island, a great little island and place to spend the night around 14:00. Both rather stuffed and glad to be on land. Our biggest mental hurdle and a lot of questions of ourselves had been answered.

bay 3 - Sat, 21st March 2009
Woke up @0230 to a little animal tugging at the feet of my sleeping bag. I immediately blamed Nick who acted too dumb to be capable of anything so I quickly had a look outside to see a little rat like creature hopping away. Looking around inside the tent the cheeky little bugger had left a solid number 2 next to my bag and also a runny white poo next to my head. I still have no idea how it got in or out0..
We were looking forward to the shorter 48km paddle today to beal Island. Alarm was set to 0345 again for an early start. But, on looking outside visibility was down to around 10m. So, back to sleep till 0500 and departed
@0615 setting off paddling in only 10 - 20m visibility, in the dark and the fog. Seas were a little rougher today, and in a way it was good not being able to
see it too well for the first 1.5hours in the dark and the fog. Getting away from our camp there was a couple of smaller islands to negotiate within 1km. We set our bearing and expected to see them but visibility was too bad to see. At least our heading was good and we didn't run the boat into them.
Both of us were rather sore and drained from the previous 2 days and some nasty chafing was developing under the arms. We were in great spirits, singing away and I recall that it was this morning that our morning ritual of singing
-the Morning Has Broken” as a the sun rises each morning. Unfortunately all we knew was the first 2 lines so as you can imagine it did get a little repetitive.
Gees we would sing some stupid stuff an talk some crap at times on the water together. Seeing lots of open water for many hours each day we needed to entertain ourselves to take the mind off the pains. I recall at one stage Nick was quiet for 5 minutes or so, then decides to say -hey, did you realise that on a day like today we’d probably each do about 40000 paddle strokes?”. Hmmm, thanks Nick, but probably not a good thing to be bringing to my attention.

Arrived at a great little place called Winter Cove on beal island @1400 to spend the night. The wallabies here are courageous little fellows. Obviously need a few indigenous fellas to pass on by to spear a few. They’d hang around our camp and not even flinch as we threw small sticks and rocks at them to scare them away.
Camped on the island for the past few days was an experienced sea kayaker, Mike, paddling his neat looking home made kayak. He was just spending a few weeks paddling around the place. Would take some courage (and confidence) we thought paddling these parts on your own. After chatting to him and hearing some great stories (such as a mate getting
attacked by a crocodile during their 800km paddle in far north QLD many years ago) I found he was amongst the kayakers that went to Antarctica on the same yacht I went down on. A group of 8 of us sailed to Antarctica on a 60footer yacht from South America in 2006 for a 23 day SCUBA diving expedition. Immediately following my trip a bunch of seakayakers,
including Andrew Macauley, sailed the same yacht for a paddling expedition down there. We swapped some funny stories, though unfortunately for the wrong reasons, of the antics of the skippers of that yacht. Those skippers and their unprofessional antics and issues is becoming well known amongst the sailing world as the -Cath and barryl” show00

bay 4 - Sun, 22nd March 2009
beal island and its surrounds would be a great place to spend a day to rest and explore but we didn’t want to waste any opportunities of reasonable weather to be able to continue paddling. Weather can change quickly in these parts and it’s wouldn’t be inconceivable to be stuck somewhere for a week if it did.
Up @0430 and entered the water @0540. buring the night the swell
had changed direction and picked up and was now coming almost directly into the beach we had landed on. In the dark it was difficult to tell how big the breaking waves were but we thought we could make out 4 sets of maybe 3 to 4 foot breaking waves. We lined our boat up on the beach, Nick got in and sealed his sprayskirt on whilst I held it followed my me quickly hopping in and skirting up. Wasting no time we took a couple of deep breaths and paddled with all our power into the waves counting them as we crashed through. Through the first one, not too bad and pushes us back a little, paddle paddle paddle into the next one and crash goes a wave onto Nick in the front. -Paddle paddle paddle” I keep yelling at him as he spits some water out. It’s important to keep the momentum up getting through the breakers and keeping the boat pointing straight. Third wave is coming and crash, into Nick it goes again0 -ahhaha” I am laughing (a
nervous laughter of sorts but itis great fun and the bloke in front cops the brunt of the waves), Nick didnit seem to think it was so funny. -Keep the boat straight” Nick yells as a bigger, 4th waves rolls up under the bow and it begins to point to the sky. bown crashes the front of the boat as the wave passes and on comes other wave, bigger and better than any of the others. It
was at this point I think Nick may have left something smelly in his seat, Iim just glad he had his wetsuit on to contain it. This wave brought the nose of the boat up and up and up till we felt as though we were vertical before crashing down, probably at an angle of 30degrees side-on to the wave. Iive never seen Nick paddle so hard before but he was
wanting to get out of here. If we got rolled it would be an ugly mess, in the dark with the rocks not too far away. After a few more messy but smaller waves, a lost water bottles, lost sunnies and broken headlamp we were through the breakers and for the next few days I didnit stop hearing Nick talk about that being the most exhilarating time of his life. He was paddling the next 3 hours on pure adrenaline. Maybe it was good we couldnit see the
size of the waves that day, it felt as though they were 6 - 8feet. The next couple of hours of paddling the seas were around 2m and a little messy. As daylight rose the seas calmed down a little but the swell picked up to 3-4m.
Our planned destination for day was a small fishing township called Killiecrankie on Flinders Island. This would be the first possible landing place on the island. As we approached Killiecrankie and after reports of the locals not being too friendly we decided that after having paddled 60km we were feeling good enough to be able to continue around further and find a nicer place to camp opposite Roydon Island. As I said before, conditions around this area can change very very quickly and unexpectedly. In this last final 2hours we copped a very very strong north-westerly wind, probably around 30knots on our side and nose. We really had to dig in deep here to keep the boat upright and moving forward at the end of a long day.
After 11hours on the water and 70km of paddling we arrived absolutely knackered at another great little beach and setup camp. We were now on Flinders Island with the bulk of the open water crossings behind us. Both of us were looking forward to a sleep in and more relaxing paddle along the coast of Flinders island the next day.

bay 5 - Mon, 23rd March 2009
buring the night whilst sound asleep I felt a firm squeeze on my bum cheek. There was only one other person in the tent so I promptly stuck my head up and made sure Nick wasnit making any unwelcome advances. I asked him if he knew what heid done and I just said to him -I hope youire dreaming about your girlfriend”. Being the charmer he is, he told me my butt -would cut the mustard”. Well, thanks for the complement but this made me eager to get this trip over and done with so Nick could get home where he belongs0.
After a well earned sleep-in we were up @0700 and departed 0820. Today was very cruisy with the shelter of Flinder Island and a nice 5 - 10knot north westerly breeze helping to push us along. It was also the first time on the trip we were able to break our day up and land ashore for a couple of breaks, stretch the legs and pee on land. We stopped at Settlement point for lunch before continuing on to the township of Whitemark for another break and walk around the township. Here I was
able to replace my sunnies with some pretty funky
bug-eye ones and fill up our bellies with some chips and ice-cream. A very nice change!
From Whitemark it was onto Trouser point to spend the night under a magnificent backdrop of the Strzlecki mountains. Weather reports were that weather should hold for the next 2days before a low passes through. We were very keen to keep pushing on and try
get to Tassie before the change.

bay 6 - Tues, 24th March 2009
Today we had a chance of being able to complete the trip all the way to Tasmanian mainland if we felt strong enough and the weather held. Up @0530 and on the water at first light @0640. First stop was 28km crossing to Thunder & Lightning at Cape Baron Island. Reports we had were that there was fresh water here somewhere. After spending 30minutes or so looking without luck and not wanting to waste time in case we could finish the journey today we decided to push on without resupply of freshwater.
The weather had begun to turn and both of us were shivering when we were stopped. Between us we had about 5L, enough for today but wed be well short if we had to camp the night. If things didnit go our way we decided that we still had plenty of gas for the stove and would be able to distill sea water with our pots to get us by. So, after a quick bite to eat off we pushed and onto Clarke Island.
With 15 - 20knot headwinds and 1 - 1.5m seas the paddle across to Clarke Island for the next few hours became hard work. It seems that in these conditions our paddling combination works really well. Both just dig in deep and put all pains, discomforts and fears aside and focus on getting where weive got to go. Conditions got particularly messy coming around the south-west side of Clarke Island before entering the shelter of the beach at Rebecca Bay @13:10.
Camped on the island here were a group of 5 paddlers that we had heard were doing this trip also. They had left 6 days before us and were now camped at Rebecca Bay before the final crossing across the notorious Banks Strait. Banks Strait is notorious for very strong cross currents and standing waves. Itis a crossing of only 27km but certainly not to be underestimated and many tales of disasters have
occurred in this region. Ideally we want to begin to cross this strait 2hours before slack tide. Slack tide was due at about 1430 so a quick decision was required. Nick and I were quite cold, and after considering we had paddled solid now for 6 consecutive days and the winds and seas were really beginning to pick up we decided to camp the night with the limited water we had at Rebecca Bay.
Hopefully conditions would improve for the slack tide in the morning at 0900. If not, weid likely have to spend a few days camped waiting for the weather to pass.
Personally I wasnit too concerned at spending the afternoon here. At the start of the trip when Nick saw me packing my fishing line he bet a carton of beer that I wouldnit catch a fish. Well, I must admit I am a pretty naturally gifted fisherman with a way of talking to the fish. So, bets were on. Intention of the line were to supplement our diet in the likely chance we were stranded on an island somewhere waiting for weather to subside. Apart from a brief period of trolling a lure down the coast of Flinders Island
(where the conditions were too weedy and Nick was doing his best to prevent me catching a fish) I really as yet hadnit had an opportunity to fish. So, with line in my hand of I went. Unfortuneately conditions werenit right for most of the fish and they werenit eating but I did manage to land a small crab. In my ‘fishi books they show crabs, therefore I believe catching a crab constitutes as a fish and as such I was the worthy winner of a carton of beer. But, Nick, being a banker and pretty good at collecting debts and interpreting fine print in his favour deemed himself the winner. At least I will look forward to drinking the carton with him in Brisbane00
The evening passed swapping stories of the adventure so far with the 5 other paddlers we were now camped with. A great bunch of guys and I think all of us appreciated the new conversation and people to talk too.

bay 7 - Wed, 25th March 2009
Awoke this morning stiff, tired shoulders, sore hands and bad chafing under the arms but it didnit seem to matter. All we had in front of us was 27km to paddle and another dream was to be achieved. So after the usual muesli with water, bread, extra tape onto a few more blisters, more tape onto my right wrist (missing a finger affects technique in the right wrist and seems to tendonitis on long paddles), a couple of photos and we were on the water again. We departed with the 5 other guys at first
light. We paddled together for half an hour or so and then Nick pointed out that with 5 of them theyid probably have a rather big entourage of people to greet them in Tassie. Weid have no-one until the driver we had hired to collect us arrives. From a distance the entourage would see us paddling and think itis their own people, as such, we could maybe steal a few cheers (yes, itis the small things that can bring you pleasure after paddling so long). So, off we steamed averaging at times the fastest we had the whole trip.
Halfway across and the conditions deteriorated, but, we were in sight of land and keep those arms pumping. After a few hours, around 1000 we arrived at Little Musselroe Bay in Tasmania. Like predicted there were a few excited waves from some people on shore (which we gratefully accepted) until they realised it wasnit the paddlers they were waiting for. Nonetheless they were a great bunch and we were please to see people there. The
other 5 arrived about 45minutes behind us and there were the obvious smiles and handshakes all round.

The days following
We were picked up from the finish by a hire driver, Mike. Phone conversations with courier companies told us that shipping a 7.3m kayak back to Brisbane wouldnit be a problem. However, once we arrived with the boat at Australia Air Express they told us -sorry, our maximum is 6m” and we very unhelpful with the situation. Lucky Mike was able to store the boat in his garage along with his limos and arrange for shipping a couple of weeks later.
Reflecting on the trip Nick was sure he didnit want to do another sea kayaking adventure but, a week or so later the discussions have passed by about possibly crossing by the western route via King Island, or, maybe even the silly idea of a direct crossing in a double down the track. Who knows what lays ahead00

Parkhurst Criterium Round 3

Round 3 of the RCC Parkhurst criteriums were held on Sunday. Macca took out the win in A grade, destroying the bunch with a swift breakaway that gave him and Glen Chadwick a half lap gap with 5 minutes to go. Dylan Nankivell and Brad Lawlor were on the chase, bringing the breakaway in on the last corner on the last lap, resulting in a sprint finish, taking out 3rd and 4th place.

Its good to see the quality of riders and their taste in apparel that we have representing M1 Cycles, I think we will have a standard Cycling "uniform" soon enough. If anyone is interested in investing in some spectacular cycle socks, contact M1 cycles ASAP, they are selling out fast!

As we all should know, this is Dylan Nankivell. The kid who is extremely good at banging his head against a wall for hours on end. He can also do wheelies.

Australia Day Ride

This ride has been organised my LG, anyone is welcome to come, but please be aware that it will not be an easy ride at all...

I have other commitments throughout the day, so I have to hit the road early. My plan is this:

Leave Gladstone at 0445 from Bunnings and be at Builyan by 730 - 8am ish. Spend 30 - 45 minutes at Builyan, have breakfast and then roll back to Gladstone.

This ride is open to anyone who can average 30kp/h in a bunch, I envisage there will be enough riders from M1 cycles to hit the wind and travel along at 30kp/h +. (Unfortunately we can't really cater for beginners in a ride of this distance.) The rest can sit in the bunch and enjoy the ride. Will be about a 180-190km day on the bike. We should be back at Gladstone midday at the latest. Normal bunch ettiquette will apply to this ride, i.e ride two abreast, obey all traffic rules, wear helmet etc. It will also be a requirement to have some "australia day" theme on your steed. Bring along a few dollars fro Brekkie and a brew.

Well well well. It looks like I've finally got a serious contender for the title of "Tough Girl Scar Champion".

Of all people, the Silent Assassin lost it on the exit out of the Sunshine Track down the hill back towards Glenlyon road on Wednesday morning.

Just goes to show, no matter how good or bad you are, how fast or slow you go, how many state podium finishes you have, when that front wheel decides to slip out from under you..... you're going down!!!

Sunday's MTB Ride

The Dirty Rats are back in action this Sunday with a long "leisurely" ride planned. The ride will leave from the Choice Petroleum on the Sunvalley roundabout at 5:00am.

Expect to spend about 3 hours on your MTB so bring plenty of water and food. The Rats will follow the lead of the Pied Piper (Giant Reggie) who seems to know the ins and outs of most of the tracks around the state forest and beyond.

Of course, the ride will finish at the Bakery for a brew so bring some coin as well.

The Not So Happy New Year

Unfortunately, it appears in M1 land that no everyone has had a Happy start to the new year.

The Snowman (Pyney) whom we haven't seen on a bunch ride for a few months now, walked into the shop during week having returned home after suffering a heart attack and having open heart sugery on Christmas Day. The good news is that he's on the mend.... and keen as ever to get back on the bike to regain his "lost muscle mass"!!!

On the road bike yesterday Sneaky Pete came off second best when he pulled the old "look mum, no hands" trick. In hospital, Sneaky Pete's got a few fractured veterbra and some other bumps and bruises. Under doctors instructions, he'll be off the bike for well over a month which means no Otway Odyssey this year :(

This morning up on the track there were the regulars, BSB and the Silent Assassin, Hef and Me. Hayden Brown also tagged along for a look around the famous Sunshine Track - Hayden's into motocross so he handled the track pretty well for his first go.

Before leaving the track Hef suggests we take another lap around track two. Sure I say. So we head off around the sweeper with me leading and I get the call "put it in a bigger gear.... go faster".... the end result, me busted again!!!

Hef is now banned from riding anywhere near me on any kind of dirt track.

The Are You For Real Moment

When we nominated for the Otway Challenge, I thought we were nominating for one of Australia's most famous, most popular MTB enduro 100k events. But when Sneaky Pete sent me this update, "a new river crossing has been added to this years event due to track wash out", I didn't realise we had signed up for MTBS - mountain bike swimming!!!

All I can say is that I hope Sneaky Pete is kidding me and that I hope Butterfly can swim!!

Parkhurst Criteriums

Sunday was the first of many Parkhurst criteriums held by the Rocky Club. Numbers were out in force, and the racing was short and sweet.

Races were a combined C and D grade (25min + 3 laps) and combined A and B grade (50min + 3 laps). Dylan Nankivelle took out 1st place in B grade (5th overall), while Brad got 4th in A grade behind Worm, Jay, and Glen Chadwick.

The crits will be held every Sunday (I think), and day licences are available. If your after a quick fix of racing and still want to be home before lunch, then I highly suggest coming down and having a chop at these races. The course is fantastic, fast, and safe.

The Sunday Adventure Ride

If you're interested in heading off road this Sunday for a bit of an easy MTB adventure around a few of the trails in Gladstone, be at the Choice Petroleum (SunValley) at 5:30am on Sunday morning.

There may be a lap around the Sunshine track, a climb up the mountain at the gardens, a scamper through the state forest and a Trek around trails one, two and three. You can rest assured that the ride will be easy paced though and not OVERLY technical - I'll be there remember!!.

The plan is to be out for a few hours so bring plenty of water. If we're lucky we may even see some of the wildlife in M1 land - Drop Bears and maybe even a Butterfly and Dragonfly....

The New Track

It would appear from a lap around the track this morning that the Silent Assassin has been hard at work.... yet again.

There's a couple of new bridge additions on track 2 and there's a few extra logs around the track - and the woo boys - to keep you heading in the right direction. But the most special touch are the handbuilt rock wall sections that are popping up around track 2 and 3.

Oh, and the track is in perfect condition at the moment.... nice and TACKY!!!!!

The Lesson Learned

When I first started getting a wee bit of confidence on the MTB, Hef said to me "never get to cocky, always ride within your limits".... for once, yesterday I wish I had of listened to him.

Out in the state forest Sandfly and Blowfly were doing the Gladstone Trails and we ended up back in the state forest near the botanical gardens having a bit of a muck around, jumping logs. Having successfully jumped a rather significant log Sandfly and I felt a huge rush of confidence.

Next log attempt ended in complete failure and me having a completely busted leg like someone's wacked me with a cricket bat.

Lesson learnt - never jump a log side on, especially when it's wet. If you're going to "jump" a log, actually lift your front wheel and "jump", just don't roll over it with your big 29er wheels because the log looks small. And most of all, Kittstar get back in your box!!! Who do you think you are, some MTB legend after 2 months!!!!

Ps - Smpathy of any kind will be accepted - especially in the form of chocolates, cheesecake (hint hint SpyCat) and pink bike bling.

The Christmas Wish List

Dear Santa

I don't want much for Christmas this year. Promise.

Just something small... about 17.5" to be precise. I'll make sure my stocking is big enough to get its 29er wheels in so don't worry about that. It's made of OCLV carbon so its quite light, so its not going to weigh down your sled too much as you travel down from the Trek Pole.

If it gets a little bumpy on your way down under, don't panic, the full body armour on the frame will make sure its protected so I won't be disappointed when I wake up Christmas morning.

Just in case you're confused about which Superfly I'm talking about, its the Superfly Pro 100 - I've attached a picture for you.

I'm writing my Christmas wish list to you Santa as the M1 Grinch has told me I haven't been a good enough girl this year..... but what would he know!!

Rocky Cup and The Toowoomba Crit

The weekend gone was full of racing. Fast and Furious. Track, Crit, and a little bit of Tri on the side.

The Rocky Cup weekend was great. Racing was hard and fast, which made it all the most enjoyable to compete and watch.

Jodi Craig had the ride of the weekend, looking good in yellow and green, and putting everything into the races she could. Her competition had her covered on age, strength, and skill, but Jodi hung on there every race, placing 5th in the 15 lap scratch, and 3rd in the final 12 lap scratch race.

In C grade, Kevin "Ken" Warham placed 2nd in the 3 lap handicap and 3rd in the unkown distance. Gladstone's new comer Archy Davis smacked 2nd in the 18 lap scratch, 2nd in the point score, 1st in the elimination race, and 3rd in the last scratch race. Pity there was no Kieren race for the boys, Archy and Ken would have been a close bet for 1st and 2nd.

Brad Lawlor placed 5th in the 20 lap scratch, 1st in the Kieren heat, 3rd in the Rocky Cup on wheels 1600m wheelrace heat, and 9th in the major Rockhampton Cup on Wheels 1600m Wheelrace.

After a few too many beers, rums and UDL's at the end of the night, somehow this managed to be permanantly written on the veledromes bar bench. Sorry to anyone who may be offended!

On the lower side of the state, Dylan Nankivell competed in his very first open Criterium on the newest criterium track in toowoomba, being put straight into the deep end in B grade.

After coming in to the shop and asking how to ride the crit, it was simple, I told him to go off the front, and that is exactly what Dylan did. He found himself in a break away of 5 A graders in the combined A and B grade race. Dylan was the only U17 rider in B grade, and the only B grader to finish the race. Did I mention he won B grade?

Well done Dylan!

The Otway Odyssey

Every now and then I get all excited and throw myself completely in the deep end at something. I think I've done it again. No, I'm actually certain I've done it again.

Thunder and I have nominated for the Otway Odyssey 100k MTB marathon challenge on 18th February 2012 in Victoria. Already there are around 493 entrants in the 100k event. There is also a 50k and 15k event being held on the same day.

To look on the upside, I guess its going to be a good practice run for the Capital Punishment Ride the following month in Canberra.

My goals for the ride:
1. Finish - in one piece!
2. Don't develop a relationship with the "Grimsweeper" who follows the last riders on the track.

Lord Garmin (of course), Bushy and Sneaky Pete, have signed up to Strava and become members of the M1Cycles club on the site and there's sure to be more; I'm sure there's more M1 Garmin (or similar) users aroun.

Remember to join the KOM competition when you sign up and see how many k's of climbing we can add up to for the year.

Tip #1

Once signed in, you'll see your name at the top of the page, there's a drop down from there. Click on 'Settings' in the drop down and then 'Privacy' when the page opens. Be sure to set it so that you truncate your rides around home and work etc, you can have more than one address. Otherwise there'll be people turning up at all hours wanting to get you out of bed to go for a roll. It's a handy little feature, as we all like to log k's from the time we get on the bike; it still records the whole ride stats, just doesn't show the track around the 'truncation'.

Who has a Garmin and downloads to GarminConnect to check out their rides? Well there’s another alternative that you might like to try, and it’s called Strava. If you don’t have a Garmin or similar bike computer, but have a smart phone, Stava have an App so you can still log your rides.
Strava does what the other sites do, and a little more; and you can have a free account (there is a pay account too, for extra features.) What Strava.com does that the others don’t, is it compares your ride to others on, what Strava calls, Segments.
If you do a ride that has a segment(s) your data over this part of the ride is automatically compared to others that have ridden it previously, like a virtual race with other riders. Who is the fastest up One Tree Hill? There’s heaps more to check out at this site too, and I’ll tell you a bit more in another post.
The other thing that I should point out is to make sure you sign up to M1Cycles club. Once you sign up (follow the link below) and create your profile, signing up to M1Cycleseasy; Click on EXPLORE on the menu bar just to the right of the STRAVA logo at the top left, then click on ‘Clubs’, type Gladstone, Australia in the second search box (Location) and search. The Rocky Cup On Wheels

If you've got nothing planned this weekend, head on up to Rocky to see Grainfed and Jodine in action at the Rocky Cup on Wheels.

Racing starts at 6pm on Friday night and from 3pm on Saturday night. The major wheel race is on Saturday night and with Grainfed's current form I'm sure he's in with a good chance for a podium placing - especially after his 3rd place at the Townsville carnival scratch race on Saturday night.

And if you haven't had enough of bike racing by Saturday night, head on down to Tannum on Sunday morning for the Tannum Tri. A few M1 riders will be there and I'm sure they'd welcome the support.

The Mud Bath

Well, the awesome foursome had a very dirty weekend away.... maybe I should rephrase that.... A very very very muddy weekend at the 4hr Woodenbong MTB enduro.

The course was pretty cool, mostly firetrack with one horrid hill climb of about 750m, a whole bunch of muddy swamp sections and heaps and heaps of cow pats.

Sneaky Pete was on FIRE, completing 12 laps and just missing out on a top 3 placing in the mens solo division. The Hef was still getting over the wog and wasn't much good for anything except for playing team mechanic and support crew. Kaz and I were having our own little dual in the women's solo division, with Kaz making a downhill pass - on me!! - on the second last downhill section to take out 3rd spot.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable race, except for the heat and the flys that were hitching a ride up the hill on every lap. Definately one that we'll be back to next year.

The Hunters and Collectors Ride

At the start of the ride this morning, the numbers were looking a little thin, but by the time we'd ridden past Bunny's we'd picked up quite a few riders - including a few bunch originals Micky Young in particular.

The bunch ended up to be quite big and I'm sure some people managed to bycott a turn all the way to the turn back onto the highway!! Mini Mick even managed to get over the dirt section for the first time in history.

It was good to see Mr Anderson back on the bike this morning after his face plant last Tuesday morning. I must admit Mr Anderson, I had the heebeejeebees riding up past Bunnys - I kept well away from the edge of the bitumen. And if you're wondering why you're now known as Mr Anderson - its from the Matrix movies.... "Mr Anderson, how good it is to see you". Sorry, its just stuck in my head!!!

Bundy Shane, myself and Hef turned early and headed back for an early brew shop stop. No silly k's today before tomorrow's 4 hour.

The Knees

Ahhhh, nothing like a few tumbles on the Sunshine Track to add a few more "tough girl" scars to the legs.

All I can say is that "my tough girl scars look better than your tough girl scars Drop Bear". In fact, I reckon I've had bigger tough girl scars when shaving!!!

Oh, and by the way Drop Bear.... I'm coming for ya on the track - I'm out sneaking in ekky laps and ekky woo-boys whilst your still laying in bed!!! And it doesn't count if you completed a full lap without unclipping if you could have walked faster than you were riding!!!!

The Woodenbong 4hr

The awesome foursome are off to the dirt again this weekend, this time south of the border to Woodenbong - obviously a town that is on the hippy side of things with a name like that!

We'll again be tackling a 4hr enduro mtb ride - will Sneaky Pete get an extra lap in on Hef??? Will there be any downhill sections to wipe the smile from Karen's face????? And will Cyclops dare to show his face for another showdown with Flee-Fly????? Only 3 more sleeps and all questions shall be answered.

The Cairns Cup

Congrats has to go to Brad who raced up north last night at the Cairns Cup on Wheels track carnival. Racing in A grade, Brad claimed 3rd in the scratch race, 2nd in the team sprint, 2nd in the kieren and 2nd in the major race, the Cairns Cup Wheel race.

A big night of racing and obviously the training has paid off - well done Brad.

The Karingal MTB 4 hour

Last weekend, the Hef and I flew south with BlowFly and FleeFly to hook up with Pete and Karen in Brissy to do the 4hr MTB ride at Karingal on Sunday morning.

About 250 riders turned up for the ride.... there was every kind of MTB under the sun, hard tails, dually's, single speeds and some turkey on a unicycle.

Hef and Pete did the most laps...... Pete earned a new nickname, Sneaky Pete when he played doggo as he rolled in with Hef before sneaking off to do one more ekky lap. Karen as always rode with a smile on her face - even down the scarey downhill sections!

Did I mention that Hef got overtaken by 4 chicks???? Even on the downhill sections!! And I thought I was a hubbard!!

The PlayBoy Bunny's Ride

So Snapper and I are bunting along at the back of the pack this morning and he says to me "Does that flame on the back of Matt's bike look like the PlayBoy Bunny symbol to you???"..... Well funny enough, I think it does!!

So, Thunder will no longer be known as Thunder.... he'll be known as The Hef.

It was a pretty cruisy bunch ride this morning with a big tailwind pushing us from the Marina to the coffee shop. Welcome to new riders Shane from Bundy and John from Tannum.... I mean Boyne.

A few riders backed up for the double turning up for the Dirty Rats ride through the Sunshine Track. Our Baby Dirty Rat did well, managing a full lap of the Cotton Wool Track (not that I'm boasting or anything!!).

The Weekend That Was

Dogs are talking that we officially have a new Mountainbiker, and apparantly he is struggling to keep upright, 3 times in the ditch to be exact. Welcome to the dirty side Brown Knight! BSB babied The White Knight around the track, starting with the Cotton Wool Track, then smashing the Woo Boys without fear!

If anyone saw Dominc riding aound on an elegant pony in his cycle gear, there is a perfectly good explanation. Dom took on the liberty of baby sitting Gary for me while I was in brisbane with Matty. What a privelage I say!

Not many on Bunnys ride, too many riders saving themselves for the Mountain Bike Ride.

The Master & The Apprentice

Matty has always promised me that he would take me on a road trip to a race, this one ended up being the Vault Crit at Nundah in Brisbane- the biggest criterium event in Queensland.

We found a great place to stay, right around the corner from Park Road. The Milton Motel. Great rooms, better rates. Boy, we were gonna look good making our way to Park Road on our roadies. Just could not wait to be sippin' on my latte like a true yuppy.

Before the race got under way, we had a few things to do, or explore. Actually, I'm not quite sure what exactly we did. This is where the weekend became the quirkiest, yet most memorable, and it only took an hour and a half.

The day started at 5.45am. A brew and some raising toast was on the menu for a 6am start. We rolled the 200m down to park road, and pulled up like pro dogs. Of course, we were the first yuppies at La Dolce Vita for or latte. This is where matty had organised to meet up with a very old friend of his. We all know him, but by what name exactly? Well, heres a few- King Kunda, The Croc Hunter, Yarrum Ttocs, Adnuk Fognik, and Cowboy. We can't reveal his real name on this blog.

Matty just wanted me to ride with the so-called master. Off we went around the Croc Hunters favourite training ride. It included several laps around The University of Queensland. Apparantly, I had to learn to admire true beauty - Adnuks' words, not mine! I dont know what the Croc was on about, but there was a lot of female talent running beside that truely beautiful river front. We endured gutters, footpaths and parks. I would never have thought i'd be taking my brand you SSL where we ended up going.

Off to south bank to do a few laps of Kunda's own Southbank Criterium course. Apparantly, it was harder to ride then normal, because someone has put market stalls, and road blocks all through the crit! That didn't stop us, roadies can do anything in Brisbane.

A gentle roll down beside the river at Southbank. I learnt that the greatest comliment of all for a woman is to get a gentle pat on the bottom by a roadie as they cycle past. I wasn't game to try, but i took his word for it. A brief hitout through pedestrains and recreational cyclist on the bike path, we rolled into Yarrum's favourite brew shop in west end some where. Coffee was great, and the food was better.

It was time for The Vault Criterium. Average Speed was 44.5 km/h. I placed 5th, and Matty 10th. The Best thing was that we had heaps of laughs and got home with all our skin on our backs.

Dazza and Bontrager

Dazza is the fair dinkum, aussie bloke. Footy shorts, polo shirt, and the Indi Rambler trike to go with!

So when it came to using an American product, he was a bit reluctant. After using the Bontrager tyres on his trike and trailers, he will never go back!

The most recent one, again, is Ray, placing second at the 2011 Canungra 6 hour. Ray was determined to beat last years placing of 4th at the 6 hour, this year he blew it out of the field, placing against younger, not so fitter riders.

Thunder said, "Grasshopper, I have studied this photo many times for three long days without eating, I consumed only water from the purist source, and at the stroke of midnight on the 3rd day, it came to me... The Flat Flat Ride

It was a perfect day for riding this morning and the turnout at the start of the ride was a reflection of this. Biggest numbers we've seen on a Tuesday for a long, long, long time.

As you would expect, with the extra numbers, the paceline was nice and firm. The good thing about it though was that the extra numbers also meant that you only hit the front once - or twice if you were really unlucky!!! From Sticky's into the Ant Nest, Grainfed pulled a solo turn from hell - too strong for every other rider in the pack. I would post SpyCat's comment on Grainfed's effort, but we're a family blog here and those choice words she used may cause offence!!!

After the paceline it was just flat, flat, flat. It was definately a chick thing this morning. SpyCat was the first to go followed by me a few k's later. Oh, but in between flat one and two, Grainfed and IJ got up close and personal with a bus going out to collect Ants. Good thing you were both breathing in at the time!

I'm pretty sure everyone on the ride this morning would agree that it was one of the best we've had!

The Frilly

The Sunday MTB Ride

After the usual town circuit float this morning, it was soon transition time to head up to the Sunshine Track. There was a good turn out. TrySmurf, SpyCat and myself headed over to the Cotton Wool track first for a couple of practice laps before the big boys turned up.

TrySmurf decided that it would be more manly of him to hand around with the boys, so he stayed for a few hot laps whilst SpyCat and I headed up to the Big Track. At the top we hooked up with LG who was waiting, complete with camera. The thing about MTBing is that it finds you out if you're a bit tired and the concentration isnt there - today this was me. On the second woo boy I went off the track, over some tree at the bottom and bounced all over the place until I somehow managed to get to the top in one piece. Seriously scary stuff. Unfortunately, one of the switch backs did get the better of me and once again I ended up eating dirt. Damn it!!!!

After about an hour of playing the boys decided to do some track building on the Cotton Wool track - they must have felt sorry for us chicks. All in all we added another 100m to the existing track, so now its about 500m long. SpyCat worked it out, that in preparation for the Capital Punishment ride, we'll have to ride 100 laps of the extended CW track to make 50ks!!! Yep - I can see that happening!!

A group vote sees the MTB rides on Sunday now starting at 8am. Meeting spot will still be the Choice Petroleum.

The Capital Punishment Challenge

BSB has laid down the challenge. BSB is doing the 2012 Capital Punishment MTB race in Canberra on March 17th.

The challenge - should you choose to accept - is either 100k or 50k around the best single track Canberra has to offer.

With everyone in M1 land getting more and more into the MTB scene perhaps it could be an opportunity for a M1 MTB road trip adventure????? We might have to fly to get there though! Anyone keen????

The Sultana Ride

Waking up this morning it was almost like a Ground Hog day repeat of Tuesday morning - blowing a gale and sprinkly showers. This time though, the four of us didn't pull the pin.

It actually turned into a bit of Girls v Boys ride. Thunder took first points for the boys when he took out the kick at the end of Kirkwood road. Some how though everyone else in the pack didn't get the memo about there being a new designated sprint zone. Boys 1 Girls 0.

Despite Floyd's best efforts on Kittens Mittens, he couldn't get to the top before SpyCat. Boys 1 Girls 1. I don't recall there being any points up for grabs over Haddock Drive. The girls took out maximum points for the pairs time trial in the Haddock Valley despite a late attempt by the boys to pull back some ground. Boys 1 Girls 2. I don't think there was any more points up for grabs for the rest of this mornings ride so it looks like the girls SMASHED the boys into pieces!!

And what's with the Sultanas??? Well according to Thunder I reminded him of some Sultana Bran ad where the Bran was going back to rescue more sultanas.... Don't worry, I didn't get it either!

The Never Was Ride

To those of you in M1 land who never made the effort to get out of bed this morning for the bunch ride..... you didn't miss much!

Only 5 riders turned up at the start, but we all went out separate ways within about 500m when we got a little "sprinkle". Apparently when you've washed the road bikes on Sunday its a Go-Back-To-Bed clause when there are a few clouds in the sky and it LOOKS like rain... better luck Thursday morning.

Oh, and a another big congratulations has to go to the Silent Assassin who backed up again on the weekend for the WA state MTB championships. This time he went one better with a 2nd place. Given the trend SA, I think you need to find another state title to have a crack at... you may just go one better!!

The Mud Rats

The Champs

How is this for a champion effort. Who would ever think that the Silent Assassin would ever pull off 3rd place at the State Mountain Bike Championships. Not sure on Rays side of the race, but he will be letting us all know very soon no doubt.

Whispers in the corridor leaked, and apparently ray said he would have won if he was on a Trek. Just like old mate next to him. Onya Ray!

On the other side of the country we had Lewy (fossil) Marshall competed in the Australian Masters Road Champs. He placed 4th in the Time Trial (7 seconds from 1st) and won the National Criterium Championship. I also believe he grabbed the Champion of Champions, and won gold in the Time Trial at in the Australian Masters Games by 2 minutes!

Well done boys. You have both just confirmed my first ever cycling rule. "Never under estimate an old cyclist".

Bring Back The Croz

On the Footy Show they started a campaign to "Bring back the Biff".... well, on the M1 Blog, I'm starting a campaign to "Bring back the Croz".

Croz was the original instigator of the Sunday morning Bunny's ride. He's been absent for some time now, so I think its time we "Bring back the Croz" to the Sunday rides. After all, you'll need to start getting some k's under your belt for the annual ride out to Many Peaks.

The Brown Cow Ride

It was a welcome back to Brother Ferg this morning who decided to finally dust off the Cannondale and come for a spin.

So it was like a heard of lost cows, that we headed out for this mornings ride from Craigs - out through Beecher, through Calliope and out to Kroombit Tops road. We decided to give River Ranch the flick after last weeks encounter with the Ant Nest construction.

It wasn't until the turnaround that the Brown Cows finally got some order together. Once the order was achieved, the LG-Grainfed train started spitting out riders on the way back from Kroombit Top road, one by one. Like beavers clinging to a bit of wood, SpyCat and I made it to the main road with what was left of the bunch... you boys really need to learn to ride with a bit more smarts and not so much testosterone!

At the coffee shop Floyd came out with the following clanger.... "remember when we used to average +33k an hour for the Saturday block rides.... today wasn't that hard". Let us all remember this statement from Floyd - I'm sure you'll eat those words by the end of the off season!!

All up today's ride was just under 80k's, if you don't do any ekky. An awesome ride.

Oh, and the MUDCAKE was down right YUMMO!!

The Birthday Ride

The World Champs Bike

Ever just seen a bike and never known what to say. Not a bike that has just been whacked straight out of a box with a "generic" label on the side of the down tube, and all you can say is, "that's a nice bike". A bike with character, one that has been specifically made for someone, with the utmost care and attention.

By now, everyone should know Craig Taylor. As Matty says everytime his name is mentioned - THE most respected man ever to clip his foot into a pedal.

Craig has just recieved a 2012 Trek Madone 6.2 with Dura-Ace Di2. Trek organised it to be painted by the same man that paints Ferrari's and Porsche's. The paintjob alone would be worth more then the bike.

Craig was given this bike by Troy from Yellow Jersey at a 24/7 cycling safety fund event. Craigs sister, (Troys mother) recently passed away after being hit my a motorist.

The Two Days That Have Been

Tuesday morning ride. There were a couple of guns missing from the Tuesday morning ride which made the paceline a little more bareable - until LG got to the front and pulled a turn from hell from Sticky's into the Port roundabout. Good to see our new riders managed to make it to the end of the paceline.

And, I never realised how many Ants there are that travel across to the Island at that hour of the morning. I couldn't stop humming... The Ants go marching two by two, hoorah hoorah.

Wednesday morning ride. Another attempt at the Sunshine Track. I say "attempt" because the Wahoo Boys got the better of me. I came a buster and have the bruises to prove it. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Mind you though, I didn't feel too bad when the Newell tribe rolled up and poor Hayden fell over not once, but twice before he even started the Wahoo Boys! I was soooooo feeling your pain Hayden!

Don't forget tomorrow's roadie ride leaves from Craigs at 5am. The weather is getting warmer (slowly), so hopefully the Freezer won't be as cold.

In other M1 news, Bushy is heading in for knee surgery on Friday. He'll be out of bike action for around 3 months...... We wish you all the best Bushy, hope it goes well.

Rockhampton Cycle Club Road Championships

M1 riders were in full flight on saturday with the Rockhampton Cycle Club holding the 2011 Club Championships at The Caves.

LG, Darkhorse and Grainfed started in A grade with Wormy and LewBear. The course seemed to suit everyone except Lew and Brad. Lew was the first to go on the last lap out when LG attacked on the hills. Despite their efforts, they were unable to unload Grainfed who flicked Darkhorse and LG in the last 50 metres. Sean pulled 2nd and Micky 3rd.

Silent Assassin, Spycat, and Dylan flew the flag for M1 in B grade. Ray was showing his true form in the race, attacking everyone and sitting on the front the whole race with Dylan. Dylan rode the race well and took off on the last uphill coming onto the home straight, knowing that lachie ferguson from rocky would nail him in the sprint if he didnt. Dylan held a 200 metre lead between him and the bunch, while cat nipped ray in the sprint.

Dylan Nankivell showed everyone that it is not about what bike or wheels you ride, nor what gearing you are running. It all comes down to what you have in the legs, and winning the B grade race showed everyone exactly that.

Mark Ruthenberg pulled 4th place in C grade, and quickly learning not to lead a sprinter out.

It was hilly, windy and fast, made a great day of racing for everyone. You all did M1 cycles proud!

Dirty Rats MTB Ride

The end of the 2011 road season marked the start of the official summer time rides for the "Dirty Rats". It was a great day a thrills and mostly spills, pumping out 2 laps, or 6 sections of rays track.

All the hitters were there including super enduro 24hr rider Matty Ness on his Gary Fisher HI-FI, and Peter Barnwell on his thingy majigy, which might I add, snapped his chain, showing his true amount of leg power and freshly tanned legs from the recent Schmidy Cancer Fundraiser Ride.

Even Gary came up for some "track maintenance" with old Ray and I after everyone left.

If anyone out there in Roadie Land wants to get a little bit more dirty, remember matty has some great specials on a few 2011 Trek and Merida bikes. It is well worth the investment!

The Owie Ride

Everyone was scooting from the coffee shop early this morning in order to make a quick transitition to head up to the Sunshine Track for a lap or two at 8:30.

Zooloo was off to a quick start almost leaving poor Bam Bam behind at the coffee shop - who hadn't even finished her brew!! Oh, and did you notice the correct spelling of Zooloo's name??? Its not actually Zulu - bicycle warrior. Its Zoo-loo - animal toilet???? Classy.

Anyway, back to the Dirty Rats. I think good fun was had by all, except for maybe SpyCat who came a cropper somewhere around the track.... maybe on the WAHOOOOOOOO Boys??

With skin off, you're now officially a Dirt Rat Cat. Hey, I think you may have just scored yourself a new Blog name in the process!

The Half Dozen Ride

We roll into Bunny's this morning and here's Whiffo - in heaven - surronded by Roadie chicks. 4 to 1. There was that many new chicks on the ride Whiffo had to ask for a new rider introduction.... you should just turn up on more bunch rides Whiff, then you'd know everyone!!

There was no Try-Smurf this morning, he was at home winning birthday brownie points. There was no Dave the Dentist either, he was at Tooth World 2012. That doesn't have a real good ring to it Dave... no where near as cool as Trek World 2012!!!

Well done to Helen and Megan who managed to stay with the pack for the entire ride. Neither of them got lost or dropped of the back of the pack. It was a record today with 6 chicks in the pack.. it was being debated if Helen's bub should have been classed as 6.5. Give it a few years and I think we'll make that a full 7.

Another perfect day for riding... just got to warm it up a bit and get rid of the smoke.

And please, don't mention DAY LIGHT SAVINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Not So Scientific Experiment

I was wondering what difference tyres make to your performance, so I decided to compare them on rollers with the powertap and Garmin 500.

I did 15km and tried to keep the same cadence and keep my heart rate and power in Recovery Zone: 100-115bpm and 130-160 watts of power.

I used the Bontrager R2 tyres, these are tyres designed for riding on the road, they are not especially fast and they retail for under $50. I got 3000km (about 100 hours) out of the rear and was very happy with it. They are comparable to any conti tyre I have used and they come from the local bike shop, they also don't have that sidewall issues that I found with conti tyres. One day I will try the faster R3 tyres and see what they come up with!

Then I used the Bontrager All weather tyre, these road tyres are NOT designed for speed and are similiar to continental Gator skins in design and feel. They are a fantastic tyre for commuting to and from work and for training. I believe one local rider has already 3500km on these guys, I have 500km on this set now and whilst they are certainly not a performance tyre, they are great for chucking on your bike to avoid punctures and to just roll to and from work etc. I would recommend them to anyone who does a lot of travelling to and from work and who wants to avoid as many flatties as possible. They really are well designed for that type of rider. (of course, if you want to make your ride harder to build strength and endurance, put a set of these bad boys on)

What difference do tyres make:

Bontrager R2 Tyres on rollers: Average Speed for 15km: 31.47kp/h
Average Heart Rate for 15km: 101 bpm
Average Power for 15km: 132

Bontrager All Weather Tyres on rollers: Average Speed for 15km: 27.6kp/h
Average Heart Rate for 15km: 111 bpm
Average Power for 15km: 160

The answer is heaps! As you can see, I had to work harder, I had to push 28 more watts and I was still about 4kp/h slower on the All weather tyres. Heart rate can vary depending on all types of factors, power is real and specific. This not very scientific, but all I was doing was comparing a proper road performance tyre with a genuine all weather training/commuting tyre.

BSB has been recruiting riders for the M1 bunch from all of the US this week. It looks like the M1 bunch will have some high profile boys in the pack soon.

His latest recruit - Vin Diesel - was more than happy to pose for this happy snap complete with M1 cap when BSB caught up with him in LA.

I hope you told him all about the Sunshine Track BSB!!!

The Thursday Morning Ride

Well, it looks like the Thursday morning bunch ride might turn out to be a bit of a winner. There was 11 of us that turned up at Craig's for this mornings ride. It was good to see not only the regulars but also a couple of new faces as well.

For those that don't know the circuit, the bunch heads out past the Gardens and then along Kirkwood Road. From here, we drop down into the Freezer before turning off the main road into Beecher Estate. A couple of us took the easy option and turned left onto Schultz Rd whilst the remainder of the boys went out to Kitten's Mittens aka Devil's Elbow. There is a little bit of pacelining through Becher Estate and then the bunch turns around and heads back up over Haddock. All up its about 40ks.

We weren't the only ones up and riding at 5am... it appears that a few others were also sneaking in ekky laps around the Sunshine Track before this weekends Sunday Ride. I think the MTB Bug has been biting!! Ray's Brother was also busted doing a few ekky road k's in the wee hours of the morning.

Don't forget Saturday's ride is leaving Craigs at 4:45am.
