Ten years ago today, Marco Pantani was found dead in a hotel room in Rimini on Italy’s Adriatic coast. It was a tragic death for a sporting genius whose career symbolised all that was magnificent, and terrible, about road racing. Pantani’s audacious attacking style left both his fans and rivals breathless. An iconoclast who expressed himself best on his racing bike, he is still adored by cycling fans worldwide.
