Rider Profile - Catriona Newell

1. What bike do you ride?
Um...it's a girls one...light blue with pink tape on the handle thingies....it's not very fancy but it's got a bit of carbon at the front where the wheel is....oh, and it's got a 'Trek' sticker on it, which apparently makes it better than average. It must be pretty good cos it's been punished hauling my butt around for the past year and it's still goin okay!
2. What would be your dream bike?
Perfect bike? Hmmm....one that makes my butt look smaller! Okay, wrong answer, I've just been told that my dream bike has alot of carbon and fancy bits with words like 'Trek', 'Madone', 'Durace' and 'American Classic' and it looks like the red one hanging up in the M1 Shop.....
3. What's your day job?
My fancy shmancy title is 'Events Coordinator' at the Gladstone PCYC, I juggle all the room bookings and organise the bars for dinners and functions, but I can pretty much be asked to help out anywhere if needed. I'm working towards my day job being a personal trainer....one day.
4. What's your favourite ride?
Mick! Sorry, he made me say it..... On a bike, I love any of the bunch rides when I feel good and go that little bit harder than I thought I'd be able too. Saturday Hitters is great, my goal is to be able to take turns the whole way AND do the River Ranch hills AND do Haddock Drive, Koowin and Cockatoo AND not be the last one standing in line for coffee at Maccas, all on a day when the bunch is feeling good! Okay, so it's a loooong term goal, but you gotta start somewhere, at the moment I'm just happy to be able to keep up with Mick so we can ride together. I just realised I used the words 'bike', 'ride' and 'love' in the same sentence....okay I give up, apparently I'm a 'roadie', but that's not to say I won't be out pounding the pavement once in awhile!
5. Most memorable biking experience?
I've only got a years worth of riding under my belt, but we did the 210km 'Around the Bay in a Day' in Melbourne, which was pretty cool (and painful towards the end). I'd recommend it to any roadie, we'll definitely be doing it again, especially if they do a pink jersey and hopefully we'll get on the 250km ride next time.
6. Least memorable biking experience?
Well there was this one ride I did, way back in the early days of my riding career (all those few months ago), when I bit off more than I could chew, only I didn't know it at the time and it wasn't my fault!.
It was a brisk Sunday morning and after completing my first abbreviated Saturday Hitters ride, I thought I give the Sundy Hundy a go. For whatever reason (probably Mick's fault) we were late (or so I was told), we sent Croz a text and said we'd catch them up near Maccas. We set off at a furious pace and in no time we were arriving at the Maccas roundabout, but to my dismay there was not bunch in sight. Apparently I wasn't pushing hard enough and I would have to try harder if we wanted to catch up. With my legs screaming at me and threatening mutany I hauled myself after Mick, who as I recall was complaining mildly about my lack of pace all the way. After an average of around 31 (which was really, really hard back then) and me firmly in the box, we had the Cross Roads in sight (a text from Croz said we'd meet them there). Suddenly Micks pace slowed and his demeanor changed from that of mildly frustrated and annoyed to very sheepish and apologetic and he asked me to promise not to hurt him.
He'd just realised that the bunch was behind us, I don't think I need to paint a picture of my reaction. Anyway, needless to say I was completely ruined for the rest of the ride and we (Mick and I) had to turn round at the 45km mark and head back. I only managed to limp back to the Cross Roads where my legs cracked the sads and refused to go on. Mick enjoyed his ride home to get the 'sag wagon' to come and pick me up.
You may be asking what about the incident with the Jag? Well it really wasn't that memorable, they're kind soft....I think they make them out of plastic now.....

7. Bike rider you admire the most?
On an international level I have limited knowledge of cyclists but I can't go past Lance for shear freakish ability, this site gives a great example of why he's so awsome (guys you may not appreciate it as much as the girls) http://www.treehugger.com/galleries/2008/12/our-favorite-guys-on-bikes.php
On a local level I admire the riders who share their passion and inspire and encourage others, or who do the amazing amount of k's, or who have smaller motors than others, but managed to ride just as hard, or the ones that encourage riders of all abilities to keep riding, or the riders that just keep turning up and trying their hardest no matter what the result. If you fit just a little into one of these catogories then I admire you. The one person I will mention by name is my husband Mick, who has the biggest heart of anyone I know.
